- There will be a question or discussion topic posted on the blog each week and your challenge is to respond to it in 2 – 3 substantial paragraphs (~/+ 150 words). You don’t need to do any research (though you may, if you wish!); your own opinions and insights after reading are all you need.
- Use your own words (don't copy/past). If you want part of your post or comment to be a quote, then put those words in quotation marks and name or hyperlink your source.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenSo, this story is about girls walking into a supermarket with just a bikini on, which apparently was strange in that time. In my opinion this isn’t weird or something, they should be able to do that now and back then.
There is no evidence, because it’s my opinion. In that time, it was actually illegal and that can also be found in the text. this is shown beneath.
‘’ "Girls, I don't want to argue with you. After this come in here with your shoulders covered. It's our policy." He turns his back. That's policy for you. Policy is what the kingpins want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency.’’ http://www.tiger-town.com/whatnot/updike/
This shows that the standards are very different between now and then. If you walk through a store without a shirt on people wouldn’t even look up strange and it is legal. People would find it embarrassing in that time, because you see a lot more skin then you used to. I think that you should be able to do this because you also can see this on the beach, so why would it be weird if you see it in a supermarket?

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn this story “freedom of dress” is really important, “freedom of dress” means that everyone has to be able to wear whatever they want and whenever they want to. I agree with this because it’s important that you can wear whatever you want, but in my opinion it has to stay appropriate. For example you can’t just go to a highly professional meeting in your short pants with slippers and a t-shirt.
In this story ‘freedom of dress” plays a role because of the 3 girls who entered a supermarket in their bikini, which isn’t that appropriate. Sammy quit his job because he thought it wasn’t fair that those girls were send out of the supermarket because they were wearing a bikini, I think it’s a little bit overdone to quit your job right away, you could say something about it to your boss. I do think that the story was written or is written about some time back because nowadays it’s less of a problem to wear anything you want.
My opinion is that you shouldn’t be told what to wear, because it’s is important that you can feel comfortable and that you can wear whatever you want. So I agree that everyone should wear whatever you want whenever you want but you should think about the position you’re in like the highly professional meeting.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion the story doesn’t totally support the freedom of dress. An example of this is that Sammy, who works at A&P, is actually supporting the freedom of dress. When the three girls walked in the A&P in their bathing suits, Sammy was a bit surprised but on the other hand he also thought that the girls had a lot of courage to do that. This shows that he in some way admired the girls for walking in their bathing suits in a public place. This was partly also because they were pretty girls but Sammy also defended the girls when his boss wasn’t supporting the way they dressed. Sammy’s boss Lengel thought it was inappropriate that the girls were wearing bathing suits. Lengel wanted the girls to leave, which they eventually did. And so did Sammy. This is also an example that Lengel wasn’t supporting the freedom of dress and Sammy was. In my opinion they are both right. I think that you have to be able to wear whatever you want and I think that bathing suits in a grocery store isn’t a big deal. If it was meant as a statement it was good that they did that. But on the other hand I think that you have to wear more appropriate clothes to show respect. For instance, if the went to church in a bathing suit, you actually show disrespect to others. But after all you and only you gets to decide what you want to wear because it is your body, your property.

-Explain how this story argues for what we call "freedom of dress". Do you agree with this argument? Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide?
In my opinion, this story has two sides. First of all I think you don’t always have the freedom to dress like you want to. We have our limits. For example you can’t go naked on the streets or going to a funeral with happy and striking clothes. Even if you want to, sometimes you can’t. another thing is when you go shopping, not every store wants you to wear bathing suits. They can say something about it and let you go back outside and I would understand this if it is happening to someone.
Secondly, you should wear what you like to wear. I think you have only one thing you like to wear and that is a bathing suit. Choose other clothes which are applicable. Of course you have the say about what you wear and how, but there are some rules and you have to follow/accept them. This is written a couple of decades ago, so people thought different about this in that time. they found it really strange in that time if you showed multiple parts of your skin. Nowadays we also have our thoughts about is but we look different to it.
This shows that we changed in a social way and it is effective to us, we want to wear what we like. People have different thoughts about it and we have to accept that, but you also have to accept the rules we have and fit in this. Don’t make this a big thing or problem and live how you want to.

1. Explain how this story argues for what we call "freedom of dress". Do you agree with this argument? Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide?
In my opinion you should wear whatever you want but there are some rules/agreements. For instance, when you go to work you should wear what your boss told you to wear. It will be weird when you show up at work in your pajamas while all your colleagues have suites on. At home you can decide what you can wear by yourself according to me, but on streets it´s different. You can´t show up naked on street. When you’re in a restaurant you should decide by yourself what you wear but it needs to appropriate enough (depends on the kind of restaurant you at). In the story the 3 girls wear bikini’s and bathing suits in the store, in my opinion that’s not appropriate (close to where I live it’s not even accepted to wear bathing suits and bikinis in the grocery stores). Sammy’s boss thought the same thing but he could also have said that they are not allowed to wear bathing suits in his store but for now let them go. This shows that there are rules for what you wear and freedom of dress is not everywhere used.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion people are allowed to choose what they want to wear. However, there are certain limits. And for some occasions you should think about what you are going to wear.
For instance: imagine you are heading to a funeral. You are free to wear whatever you want. But is it respectful to wear a really festive shirt or dress in a group of grieving people? Probably not. When you are going to the shopping mall, or to the cinema, you can wear what you want. But you’ll have to be dressed properly. Otherwise you’d probably harass the rules in your mall or cinema.
This is my opinion because we live in a free land in which we are allowed to wear whatever we want. However, at public areas and occasions there are policies, clothing etiquettes and rules about what you should wear. At home, you are free to wear whatever you want.
In my opinion everybody should have the legal right to dress however they want. For example: when someone feels very shy and modest in clothes that were decided by a dress code or opinions, but they feel very empowered while wearing the tank top they like so much or when they wear their favourite shorts.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI think that the girls in this book wore something that was maybe unacceptable for the time they lived in. But if I think about it right now. I think that they were very brave and that they simply ignored the ridiculous dress standards of that time.
In that time people thought that it was decided for women what they could wear, where or when. This shows why the people in the shop were so shocked to see three women who were only wearing bikini’s entering the shop. But if you would see three women in bikini’s entering a shop that is near the beach today, you would think it’s normal. This shows the change of dress codes over time.

Why did Sammy quit his job?
This story is about three girls going to the A&P in bathing suits. The owner of the A&P thinks that this clothing style is inappropriate for his shop. He tells them that they have to wear proper clothes. He specifically said, “Girls, this isn’t the beach”. This was done in public, the girls felt embarrassed and started blushing. Sammy didn’t agree with his boss. His boss even asked Sammy to cancel the purchase from the girls but Sammy refused to do that. After that he told the boss that “he quit”. His boss was surprised because he is a friend of Sammy’s parents. His parents would probably be disappointed if Sammy quit. But Sammy thought that doing the right thing is more important than having a stable income to support himself. So to sum this up: Sammy quit his job because he didn’t agree with his boss about the policy of clothes.

When you read the story about Sammy and the three girls at the A&P you will find out there are three girl who are wearing bikini’s when going to the supermarket, in my opinion this is inappropriate, not everyone is willing to see you wearing just a bikini. You can wear whatever you want at home, but when you’re around other people you can also wear what you want but with some boundaries. Let’s take me going to school as an example, I also can’t come to school with just wearing a bikini, I will probably be send back to home for inappropriate clothing, or when you’re a police officer you can’t wear your pajamas to work, because some people won’t take you serious as a police officer. Besides that I don’t think your boss will be happy. My example shows you can’t always wear whatever you want wherever you want, you sometimes should think about the rest of the people who are going to see you and which impression you want to leave behind.
