Question 1:
A&P by John Updike discusses “freedom of dress”, by showing how 3 girls in bath suits get addressed by the manager, Lengel of the show they are in. In my opinion, this is a bit old fashioned, because freedom of dress is, according to me, a good thing that people can wear what they want, íf then think about not insulting anyone with it. The writer thinks so too.
This is shown in the fact that the main character, Sammy, who is in first person, quits his job to help the girls. His intentions were not very clear, but I think that he did it because of what he thinks just before he quits: “That’s policy for you. Policy is what the kingpins want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency.” (A&P by John Updike). What Sammy means with this is that people with power think that their ideas are law, and that disagreements are all wrong.
Sammy quits his job, and although it’s not sure if he does that to impress the girls or to be free from his old-fashioned boss. Considering the last option is right, this story discusses “freedom of dress”
Question 3:
Multiple themes are possible in this story, I choose sacrifice, because I think this is a really important theme.
The main reason I think this, is that, however you look at A&P, you can’t deny that Sammy sacrificed his job, and it depends on the way you see the story if he did this for his own moral or for the girls in bath suits.
One way to look at the story is that Sammy wanted to impress the girls, by quitting his job and make his own future insecure, and another way is that he didn’t want to work for someone who thinks he is superior. For this reason, I believe sacrifice is an important theme.

VerwijderenI partly agree with you. I also think that people can wear whatever they like, but they have to be dressed a bit descently. For example you mustn't wear very happy clothes to a funeral, even if you think you are not insulting anyone with it.

Why did Sammy quit his job?
In my opinion, Sammy quit his job because he didn’t like that Lengel embarrassed a girl he liked, and he thought she did not deserve that. The evidence for this is that he said: “You didn’t have to embarrass them.” When Lengel asked him why he quit his job. Secondly, Sammy really seemed to like Queeny, he was thinking nice stuff about them the whole time, and that’s why he really didn’t agree with his manager when he told the girl and her friends that they had to leave the store and come back when they had covered up their shoulders, even though they only got snacks. Maybe Sammy liked the way that the girls wanted to look different and dressed to stand out, and he didn’t agree with his manager telling them that it was not allowed to do so in his building. He probably didn’t want to be part of something that insulted people like this.
This shows that Sammy quit his job because he didn't like the way Lengel told the girls that they aren't welcome in his store if they are dressed like this.
Very nice explanation! I totally agree with you.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe Story A&P by John Updike is about three girls walking into the local supermarket wearing nothing but bikinis. This story written from the perspective of cashier John Updike covers what we call “freedom of dress”. But what is freedom of dress? Freedom of dress doesn’t really have one single meaning since freedom means something different to everyone. I think it means that people should be allowed to dress however they want and that people shouldn’t be telling other people how to dress. But my friend might think that there are limits, and that people should for example absolutely not wear something that could possibly scare someone. Of course that does sound logic to me, but you can make up so many of these small ‘rules’ that the whole concept of freedom of dress is gone. I think that if you feel comfortable, happy, satisfied or any other positive feeling about your outfit, you should go with it and just wear whatever you like, whenever you like, wherever you like.
Kaas
VerwijderenI partly agree with you. I think people should be able to wear whatever they want, altough I also think that you should not insult anyone with it. I know this is a pretty big thing to say; maybe people are insulted by almost anything you wear, but I mean that you should just think about how the way you dress up has influences on others.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion you should be able to wear what you want, but it depends if you care what others say about you, in this case your dressing. An example of this is the three girls in A&P. They just wear what they wanted to wear. In those times it is also very strange to wear bathing suits while going in to the A&P. This shows that If you do care and want to fit in, you can’t really wear what you want, otherwise you won’t fit in. If you don’t care about someone else’s opinion, you can wear whatever you want to wear.
I think the opinion from Sammy was that these ladies or anyone else could were what they want. But his boss sent the girls out because he thought that the girls were supposed to wear, to his opinion normal clothes. Sammy didn’t like this decision and I think that’s why he quit.
You might want to consider rephrasing your text with some clearer sentences you also should try to repeat yourself a bit less. The argumants are great the phrasing could use improving.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenPossible theme in John Updike’s A&P
In my opinion appearance is an important theme in John Updike’s A&P. We know this because the whole story develops around the appearance of 3 girls, wearing only their bathing suits. The story then demonstrates the different reactions from different people on the girl’s appearance. These reactions range from amazement to laughter. Another piece of evidence is the fact that the main character (Sammy) is inspired by the girls’ freedom to leave his job and be free.
This suggests the writer values appearance and wanted other people to think about appearance to. The author wanted to show people the importance of appearance in our society. Why do people find it weird what others wear? Why not just let them be and do whatever they want? I think the writer chose a important theme in his story and it resulted in a nice story.
I totally agree with this paragraph, I think you explained it well and you used good examples. The theme fits the story well.
VerwijderenMinke van Manen, ctv3a
I think so too, that appearance is an important theme in A&P. The examples are good, but I believe that the reactions range from amazement to annoyance, because Lengel was annoyed by the girls' behavior. One little thing, in the first sentence in the last paragraph "think about appearance to" should be "too", and in the last sentence it should say "an important theme" because the word after "a" begins with a vowel. But other than that, I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on the subject!

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 1;
You can have a very interesting discussing about the book A&P from John Updike. The story argues for what people call “freedom of dress”. An example of this is that in the book there are three girls walking in bathing clothes through a shop.
In my opinion you are free to wear whatever you like, as long as it’s not irritating or annoying other people. For example, a normal shirt with jeans are fine, but I don’t think that people are happy to see people wearing too short shorts where you can see someone ass. So, I agree to the argument “freedom of dress”, as long as people keep it normal.
So, I think people shouldn’t be told what to wear, because there are going to be a lot of discussions about their freedom of dress and I think it’s important for people to wear whatever they want, because the need to feel comfortable in their clothes.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenA&P by John Updike
I am going to discuss the question: Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide? In my opinion you can wear whatever you want to wear whenever you want if it’s appropriate for the situation and the people that are around you. Take for example the three girls in this story, they wear clothes with a purpose for swimming. They wear it in a shop where people of all ages come, this caused the manager of the shop to yell at them, I don’t think that what the girls did was appropriate and that they should’ve worn the bathing suits for swimming and not for shopping. This shows that what you wear is indeed an important part of a person and gives off a first impression, I think “freedom of dress” is important and you should be able to wear what you want if nobody is bothered by this.
I totally agree with you because the girls in the shopping centre indeed were inappropriate, but in my opinion you should also be able to wear whatever you want, although you also shouldn’t insult people with wearing inappropriate clothes. So what you said that they shouldn’t have worn an bathing suit to the shopping mall is indeed true.
VerwijderenI partly agree with you because it's not really appropiate to wear a bathing suit in a shop. But if they needed to pick up something and went swimming before or they wanted to go swimming after, they probably didn't intend to go shopping dressed like that. People shouldn't be bothered by them wearing bathing suits because they would also see them dresssed like that at the beach.
VerwijderenDeze reactie is verwijderd door de auteur.
VerwijderenI completely agree with you. In my opinion you are correct when you say that you are allowed to wear whatever you want whenever you want as it stays appropriate for your surroundings. Indeed, those three girls shouldn’t have worn bathing suits to the shop, which is shown by the manager yelling at those girls, because it’s not polite to the rest of the retailers. This does show that you can’t always wear what you want whenever you want.
VerwijderenBastiaan Bjørnå.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn the story three girls walk into the supermarket with informal clothes and the man behind the counter sees how the manager confronts them about their clothes. I think that the man behind the counter disagreed with the manager and that’s probably the reason why he quit his job.
Firstly, you should be able to wear whatever you want to wear, but you still need to consider that you can’t wear everything at some places. This is shown in the story when the girls walk into the supermarket and are confronted by the manager. In my opinion people don’t have to confront other people for what they’re wearing but, in some cases, like for instance the manager of the store or a librarian should be able to tell people what to wear in the library and the people from the House of Representatives can’t show up in their sweatpants or pajamas.
I may be wrong, but i dont think that the second part of your paragraph explains the point you made in the first part, and it also doesn’t answer the question you chose. For example, you didn't tell us why he disagreed with the manager, you only said why the girls were sent out of the supermarket and why you agree with that.
VerwijderenMinke van Manen, ctv3a
Some parts of you paragraph are a bit confusing. For example, you are telling us that you should be able to wear whatever you want, but still need to consider that you can't wear everything you want at some places. Some of your parts are contradicting itself a bit. I understand the point you are trying to make, but you might want to make the exceptions more clear. And some of you sentences are a bit long. But as you can see, I have trouble with that myself as well.

You can argue about a lot of things in this book. Should the girls in the book be able to wear wat they want whenever they want? In my opinion You should have “freedom of dress”. If you want to wear a pink dress I think there should be no one to hold you back from wearing it. But, there are limits. If you have to wear a suit at the office you can’t just show up in your onesie. But if you go out with friends you should be able to wear what you want (besides being naked). People shouldn’t be told what they need to wear in public or at home, but if you have to wear a certain type of clothing to your work I don’t think you have a choice. I don’t think that what the girls are wearing is the most appropriate thing to wear in a supermarket but I still think it’s their own choice.
I partly agree with you, because you should keep in mind that those days were very different from now and that's maybe because of the weird reaction. I would totally agree with you if this happend in our time.

3. Discuss a possible theme of the story
In my opinion, an important theme in A&P is power. There are many different kinds of power in this story: Lengel’s power as the A&P’s manager, Queenie’s power as the perceived leader of her group, the girls’ power to inspire desire in the men around them and Sammy’s power for standing up for people.
An example of Lengel’s power is when he publically embarrasses or humiliates the three girls. He uses his power as store manager to tell them that it isn’t appropriate how they dress (or act) while shopping in his store and that they aren’t allowed to be in there when only wearing bathing suits.
Sammy’s actions can also be seen as power. The power of standing up for other people, for instance. When the three girls are humiliated by Lengel and are walking to the door to leave, Sammy says that he quits. He stands up for the girls to show that’s it’s not okay what had happened, that it’s not okay to treat people like this. I think that you can see this as power too, but than totally different from the way Lengel uses it.
The above examples show that power can be used in different ways. To tell people that they are wrong just because you have more power than they have or to show people that it’s good to have the power to stand up for others and yourself.
I really liked your blog and it made me think. I never realized that power could be a theme of the story and I really like that. I think that you did a great job!

A&P by John Updike, question 1
“Freedom of dress is part of our freedom of expression’’
In my opinion you should be allowed to wear whatever you want wherever you are, but I do believe that you should sometimes change your clothing style for a particular occasion, like a funeral or a wedding.
This is shown in the story of A & P by John Updike, because three girls went to the supermarket in bathing suits. They did not think that they were wearing inappropriate clothes, but some people in the story did not think it was appropriate to wear bathing suits to a supermarket and that they should conform to clothes that people in society wear. This shows that the story does not comply with the phrase: Freedom of dress,
And if people are told to wear other clothes, I think that everybody is able to express their opinion to someone who has a unique clothing style or wears different clothes compared to society.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion Sammy quit his job because he was trying to impress one of the pretty girls in the bathing suits. He might have thought that he wouldn’t have a chance with this girls when he was working behind a slot in the supermarket.
This can be seen in the way that Sammy describes one of the three girls. He describes the girl who seems to be the leader as a queen, which I would say is a real compliment. Also you can just read the appreciation he has for ‘Queenie’. For example when he’s talking about how she’s walking with her long white prima donna legs or the fact that he’s fantasizing about her living room the moment she starts talking.
All of this suggests that he liked ‘Queenie’. He may not immediately be in love with her, but he does kinda have a thing for her. When he quit he hoped the girls, and especially ‘Queenie’, heard it. But unfortunately for him they didn’t. So if his goal was to impress the girl by quitting his job, it failed.
Minke van Manen, ctv3a
VerwijderenI think that 'trying to impress Queeny' wasn't the only reason for Sammy to quit his job. For example, the sentence: "I look around for my girls, but they're gone, of course." Sammy already knew that the girls would be gone by the time he left. I think he quit his job because he didn't want to be part of a company that embarrasses people because of what they wear.

Discuss a possible theme of the story
In my opinion some themes in the story are: appearance, power and consequences.
I know that the main theme in the story is appearance, because the whole story is about three teenage girls walking into a grocery store wearing only bathing suits. The manager of the grocery store confronts the girls directly, because he thinks that the girls aren’t dressed decently for entering a store. Power is another theme in the story, because Lengel, the A&P manager has enough power to tell the girls that they are not dressed decently to enter the grocery store and to kick them out. Another reason why power is a theme in the story is because Queenie is the leader of the ‘group’ , so she has the power over the group to tell the girls what they are going to do etc. Consequences is also a theme in the story, because all the characters in the story make choices that have negative consequences. Queenie and her group for example choose to go into the Grocery store with nothing on but their bathing suits. Sammy chooses to quit his job to defend the girls. All these situations have consequences. The consequence for example for Sammy is that he is unemployed and that he has to find another job.
This shows that appearance, power and consequences are a very important theme in this story.
I partly agree with you. I do agree with your three themes: appearance, power and consequences. The part I don’t agree with is your main theme. I don’t think the main theme is appearance but consequences. My evidence for this is because as the three girls walk in the shop with their bathing suits there are some major consequences, like the manager yelling and Sammy quitting his job, but him quitting his also have consequences for itself. So, I think the theme consequences plays a bigger role in this story than the theme appearance.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenA&P by John Updike, question 1
In my opinion, you can interpret ‘freedom of dress’ in a lot of different ways. It can be about clothes, how you have your hair done, your nails, tattoos or piercings. Not everyone is open for different things. This can be seen in the story A&P by John Updike, written in the year 1961. In that story there are 3 girls who are walking in the supermarket in their bathing suits. Lengel, the store manager, chastises the girls for walking there in their bathing suits. I think that people can wear whatever they want, as long as it doesn’t disturb other people. If you want to go to a public place like the supermarket wearing your pyjama’s, then why wouldn’t you do it? People might look or stare at you, because it doesn’t happen on a daily basis. But if you like to wear your pyjama’s, I think that there is no reason for anybody to send you away.

Question 2:
I think Sammy quit his job, because he doesn’t like the way Lengel treated the three girls. Sammy thinks that Lengel treated the girls unfairly. He wants to stand up for the girls and he hopes that they see Sammy as a hero.
This is demonstrated when Sammy says to Lengel that he embarrasses the girls because Queenie (the prettiest girl) got some blush on her cheeks when Lengel says to her that the shop isn’t the beach. He wants that the girls wear decent clothes in the shop.
This implies that Sammy thinks different about what Lengel said to the girls and that is why Sammy doesn’t want to work anymore for him.
Question 3:
In my opinion, a theme of the story is liberty and authority, because in the story the clothes that the girls are wearing, when they are shopping, is a problem for the shop manager, but they think it’s okay to wear these clothes.
This is shown when the girls are wearing bathing suits, but the shop manager doesn’t agree with that. He thinks that you should wear decently clothes in his shop. But the girls think different about that, they think that bathing suits are decent.
This suggests that the shop manager decides the rules for other people. He claims to have authority over other people. The girls want to decide by themselves what to wear and not that other people can decide what they have to wear. So, a theme of the story is liberty and authority.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 3: possible theme of the story
Firstly 3 girls in bathing suits entered a shop (A&P). This story is written in 1961 in that time it wasn’t really usual to go to a shop in a bathing suit so in my opinion an important theme in the story is freedom.
The evidence for this is that the 3 girls who walked into the shop got observed by Sammy. This is one way to say that it wasn’t really usual to wear a bathing suit in a shop. The three girls kind of knew it wasn’t really usual to wear a bathing suit in a shop. But they did because they wanted freedom in what to choose to wear. Later in the story Lengel says: ‘we want you to be decently dressed if you come here’ Queenie answers on that with ‘we are decent.’ So in my eyes the writer of the story is kind of saying that he wants more people to wear something else instead of what they would usually wear. In other words: He wants more freedom in what to choose to wear.
This shows that an important theme in A&P written by John Updike is freedom.

Question 1: In this story the manager of the A&P doesn’t apply ‘freedom of dress’, he doesn’t want the girls to come in his store with bath suits on because he thinks it’s too informal. I think you should be able to choose what you want to wear, for example a supermarket isn’t like an very important place for people or the society. So I think you should be able to for example just wear bathing suits in a store. Like I said I am really for freedom of dress but you should also consider that there also have to be exceptions. I don’t think you should be allowed to show up in like a bathing suit in the governments building for example. In my opinion religious places like churches for example, should be able to determine their own ‘dress code’. I think that for churches the leaders have to decide what to forbid and what not, for the other exceptions the government should determine the rules.

My question to you is then, is there still freedom of dress when there are rules at some places or events? But all in all I really like your blogpost!
Freedom of dress in A&P
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBy siyon moti, ctv3b
The main character in the short story A&P, Sammy, quits his job after he sees his boss mistreat some girls because they were wearing bathing suits in his store, was this a bright idea, of course not but I’m not here to talk about the adolescent’s stupidity. The story argues for freedom of dress because the main character is for it and the main ‘antagonist’ (the owner of the store) is against and he is portrayed as being overly conservative.
I am going to make a case for the store owner because I think that his stance on the subject and all the arguments you could make for that stance aren’t flushed out enough i.e., I think that the character is badly written.
So what arguments can you make for restricting what people can wear in for example your store. Your clothing is linked to your persona, if you see somebody in farmers clothes you assume that that person is a farmer, I think we can all agree that your appearance is linked to how people perceive you. So if you want to appear formal as a business, a policy that prohibits non formal clothing will help your business’ reputation.
Something that wasn’t as much of a problem back then but is now, sexual harassment, can also influence your policy. It’s a well known fact that make-up, high heels, and skimpier clothing increases sexual appeal when worn, restricting these things can decrease the amount of sexual harassment in your workplace. I’m not saying we should ban these things but they do play a significant role in the problem so prohibiting them would be reasonable.
Lengel (the shop owner) was following societal norms and if you know anything about human nature you would know that it is extremely hard for us to resist societal pressure. Since we tend to overestimate our importance in other peoples’ life we conform so that they accept and think well of us. I.e., we’re scared of being disinherited by the human race. Most of us are not critical thinkers and aren’t willing to question our own beliefs and values so we stick to societal norms, and if there is a noticeable change in the behavior of the masses, it is most likely instigated by a few people that influenced the younger generation which tends to be more progressive than the older generations. This change often doesn’t transition in to the way the older generations think, leaving them isolated with a world view that doesn’t fit in with cultural norms of society. So Lengel’s story is more tragic than the story conveys it to be.
I agree with you on the societal pressure being high in that time, but I can't agree with you on the fact that you think it's stupid that Sammy called out his boss on mistreating the girls. In my opinion that's brave.

This story argues with what we call “freedom of dress”. People should be able to wear whatever they want. You should feel comfortable in your clothes and if you can’t wear what you want, you don’t. But sometimes there’s a specific dress code. For example: at work. Sometimes at work there’s a dress code and I think you should follow that. If the A&P, where the three girls were confronted with their clothing, had a clear sign saying “no bathing suits” the girls probably wouldn’t have entered the shop. And also the manager had a reason to confront and embarrass the girls.
This story takes place in 1961. Apparently in that time people didn’t show that much skin as they do nowadays. It wasn’t normal to walk in a store wearing your bathing suit. People won’t look up if you would wear a bikini in the supermarket nowadays. When you go to the beach you see people in their bathing suits all the time.
The reason why Sammy quit his job is because he also thought the girls should be able to wear their bathing suits and the manager shouldn’t have embarrassed them like that. Or he wanted to be cool because he liked one of the girls, but they had already left the shop when he quit his job. So, there are two reasons why he could have quit his job.
A possible theme of the story could be ‘no freedom of dress’. The girls aren’t allowed to enter the store in their bathing suits, according to the manager. That means that there is no freedom of dress.
I really like your story and the way you explain your opinion, but I don't agree with one of your statements. You said that nowadays people wouldn't mind if you walk into a story with your swimsuit on, but I think there are people who do think that is a bad thing.

2. Why did Sammy quit his job?
The first moment Sammy saw the girls, and noticed Queenie, was a special moment for him. I have never seen someone describe a person so lovely and in so much detail as he did. As he described her, she was like an angel. So when Lengel made her feel uncomfortable, he did not like this.
But in my opinion this was not the only reason he quit. Sammy did not describe his workday very passionate. I believe that he did not enjoy his job, but he could not just quit it. Lengel was a good friend of his parents, and he might have thought that his parents would rather not want him to quit his job. It might mess with their friendship with Lengel. So he needed a good reason. To him, Lengel insulting the girls was a good reason. This was the right time, because he had a reason to quit, and secretly hoped that he might get more out of it. Queenie did not notice him, but making a statement like this in the middle of the store might. When it turned out this did not make a difference, he was sad, but not devastated. He did not risk everything for her, he risked everything for his own happiness. Sammy quit his job because that had always been his plan. He only needed the right reason.

BeantwoordenVerwijderen1. This story argues about ‘freedom of dress’. In the story the writer tells about 3 girls who come in a store with their bathing suits on. The main character Sammy thinks the girls are really pretty, but another character, Lengel, thinks they’re not ‘decently’ dressed. This is shown in the sentence said by Sammy: “I mean, it was more than pretty.” Lengel says instead: “I want you decently dressed when you come in here.” This two examples show that the two characters in this story argue about how they’re dressed: ‘freedom of dress’. In my opinion people can wear whatever they want, but within limits. For example: If a student goes to school she may be dressed fully red but coming to school in a bathing suit goes too far. This indicates that I agree with Lengel’s opinion.
2. I believe Sammy quitted his job because he was in love with one of the three girls. At the moment Lengel ‘embarrassed’ the girls (who were walking away) he wanted to get their attention by saying: “I quite”. This is shown in this sentence, said by Sammy: “The girls, and who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say “I quit” to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero.” I think this has been used to show that he wanted their attention. This would make the reader understand that he really liked one of the 3 girls.
3. In line with my answer to the first question I think the theme of this story is freedom of dress. This can be seen in the same two examples as in the first questions. Lengel and Sammy are arguing about if they’re ‘decently’ dressed. This would make the reader think about who of them is right. That’s why I think that freedom of dress is an important theme of the story.
4. In my opinion this story can have taken place around 1950, but also nowadays. I know this because of the fact that Lengel thought they weren’t ‘decently’ dressed, which means that in that time it wasn’t really normal to just enter a story in your bathing suit. Nowadays we accept more and more, but entering a store in your bathing suit would still make people ask themselves, is this ‘decently’ dressed? This shows that this story didn’t really happen at a specific time, but will always cause discussion. This is because the question of what is ‘decenty’ dressed is timeless.

First of all, I think Sammy quits his job because he thinks his boss is being unfair. For example, at the moment Sammy says he will quit, his boss responds with: “You didn’t have to embarrass them.” Then Sammy says: “It was they who were embarrassing us”. I think this shows that Sammy thinks that his boss is being unfair by telling those girls to get out of his store, because they are underdressed.
Secondly, I think that the girls open Sammy’s eyes to do something with his life and to commit to living his dreams. This becomes clear when Sammy’s boss says: “Sammy you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad.” Sammy responds: “But it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through” This shows that he has been listening to his parents for a long time but now he wants to do things he likes.
So after all I think the reason Sammy quits his job is because his boss is unfair and he wants to live his own dreams. If I were Sammy I would do the same, it’s important to be yourself and live your own life.

This story argues about ‘‘freedom of dress’’ and takes place in an A&P where three girls are walking in, only wearing bathing suits. The manager of the A&P warns them that the next time they should have their shoulders covered. I am going to give my opinion about this in this blog.
In my opinion, it’s not appropriate that the girls are only wearing bathing suits. They could have just put on a jacket or a shirt. Furthermore, it happened in 1961 and in that time women were not used to show a lot of skin, especially not when they were outside. I therefore understand that the manager warned the girls.
However, in my opinion everyone should be allowed to wear whatever they want, as long as it is appropriate. For example, it is really not appropriate if you wear very colourful clothes to a funeral. Some people might think that you feel cheerful on this sad day. On the other hand, if you are wearing colourful clothes to school it’s perfectly fine. This shows that you should adapt your style to the situation.
As long as you take into account the ‘social dress code’ and as long as you don’t offend anyone, you shouldn’t be told what to wear. Everyone has their own style and they should wear something in which they feel comfortable. I think that it is strange that some people are being told what to wear. For example, some schools have school uniforms. I don’t think that everyone feels comfortable in their school uniforms and that they would rather wear their own clothes.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhy did Sammy quit his job?
I think Sammy quit his job for two reasons. The first reason is that he saw Queenie he liked her immediately. He thought he wouldn’t have a chance with the three girls if he stayed working in the supermarket. The other reason is that he didn’t like the fact that a good friend of his parents Lengel made an uncomfortable situation for Queenie.
This is demonstrated when Sammy is talking about Queenie and how nice she looks and all other different compliments he gave. He also has a lot of respect for her when he says that Queenie is a ‘queen’ or ‘leader’.
You can conclude that he didn’t ‘love’ her. But he definitely liked her and there was a thing he liked about her. At the moment he quit his job, he hoped the girls would like him. But sadly enough they didn’t see him. So at the end he didn’t succeed his ‘mission’ to impress to girl if that was his mission.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion1:
In my opinion this story argues with “freedom of dress, because there is a strong opinion about what the girls are wearing.
This can be seen when Lengel walks in the shop and sees three girls wearing a bathing suit. He immediately approaches them and says something about their clothing.
He says that they should dress differently, because there in a store.
This has been used to let everyone know that you shouldn’t wear what you want, wherever you are. Somethings just aren’t appropriate.
In my opinion, I agree with the argument “freedom of dress”.
For example, I think you should be able to wear whatever makes you comfortable. As long as it doesn’t distract people. You can wear short pants and a cropped shirt, but just not clothes that are too short. I think everyone understands what is to short or inappropriate to wear.
This shows why I agree with the statement “freedom of dress”, as long as it’s
appropriate.
This is why I also think people should not be told to wear. It’s there choice to wear what there are comfortable in. There’s a new fashion trend going in which old clothes come back. And were people make their own fashion. I think it is great that people wear things that are a bit out of the box. And this is why I think people should not be told what to wear.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion the story partly argues for freedom of dress. That it supports freedom of dress can be seen when Sammy quits his job almost right after the confrontation the girls in swimsuits had with the manager Lengel. This implies that Sammy didn’t agree with Lengel and therefore thought that quitting his job would show the girls that he supported them. That the story doesn’t support it can be seen in the fact that Lengel confrontates the girls about their ‘inappropriate’ outfits. The writer has probably done that to also show that even though you should be free to wear what you want there are boundaries.
Secondly, from my point of view, people shouldn’t be told what to wear. I think that because we are all unique on our own way and we should be allowed to express us in the way we dress. So why tell people to blend in or stop dressing the way they like? That wouldn't do anyone any good. To conclude I suggest that we just use our intellect and think about if what we want to wear isn't too inappropriate.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion, freedom of dress is shown in the story of John Updike by the girls that wear bathing suits in the A&P.
Sammy quit his job because Lengel told the girls that they are not allowed to wear their bathing suit in the supermarket. This is because of the guidelines that the supermarket has and in my opinion the girls should apply to those guidelines. If they choose not to, Lengel could’ve said that the girls should get out and put on clothes and then come back. People should not be told explicitly what to wear, because everyone has to be a bit different. Of course, there should be guidelines for what they wear. For example, you of course can’t wear a clown outfit to a funeral. And the government has to have a little say in what you should wear, but not too much. There still has to be freedom of dress of course. So, the people also have to have a say in what they wear.
Try to avoid repetition. You used "of course" three times at the end. However, I liked how you looked at this situation from multiple sides; what the girls were wearing, that everyone has to be a bit different and what you should definitely not wear to a funeral.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCtv3a Question 3
In my opinion some important themes in the book A&P from John Updike ‘appearance’ and ‘power’. That appearance is a theme can be seem clearly as the book is about three teenage girls with a appearance that is discussed throughout the book. The tree teenage girls, walk into a shop close to the beach wearing only bathing suits. Some characters react positive on this, some negative. The manager of the store, Lengel, thinks it’s inappropriate to wear nothing but bathing suits in a grocery store. He tells the girls they should be decently dressed. He humiliates them by telling them this publically. Sammy, the protagonist in the story, doesn’t agree with this and at the end of the story he quits his job because he thought his boss didn’t had to embarrass these girls. This also shows the theme power. The manger use his power to embarrass the girls in public. Sammy stands up for the three girls and I think this can also be seen as a form of power. This all suggest that ‘appearance’ and ‘power’ are important themes in the book .
I really like your choice of themes because there're unique and most people wouldn't have thought about them.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion the story doesn’t totally support the freedom of dress. An example of this is that Sammy, who works at A&P, is actually supporting the freedom of dress. When the three girls walked in the A&P in their bathing suits, Sammy was a bit surprised but on the other hand he also thought that the girls had a lot of courage to do that. This shows that he in some way admired the girls for walking in their bathing suits in a public place. This was partly also because they were pretty girls but Sammy also defended the girls when his boss wasn’t supporting the way they dressed. Sammy’s boss Lengel thought it was inappropriate that the girls were wearing bathing suits. Lengel wanted the girls to leave, which they eventually did. And so did Sammy. This is also an example that Lengel wasn’t supporting the freedom of dress and Sammy was. In my opinion they are both right. I think that you have to be able to wear whatever you want and I think that bathing suits in a grocery store isn’t a big deal. If it was meant as a statement it was good that they did that. But on the other hand I think that you have to wear more appropriate clothes to show respect. For instance, if the went to church in a bathing suit, you actually show disrespect to others. But after all you and only you gets to decide what you want to wear because it is your body, your property.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI think that the story was written in the sixties. If you didn't know yet, the sixties was a time where a revolution started about a few social norms and values.
One of them is related to the way people dress themselves. This revolution was quite popular under the young-adults but less with the elderly, as described in the story.
An example of this is Sammy (as described in the story) who is a young-adult who stood up for the girls that came into the store with only their swimsuits on.
Lengel, the much older manager of the store, thought otherwise. He thought that the girls were inappropriately dressed. I totally agree with his point of view. If people would go into a store with only swimsuits on I would also think it is quite inappropriate but then again this really shows that the story was written in the sixties.

Why did Sammy quit his job?
This story is about three girls going to the A&P in bathing suits. The owner of the A&P thinks that this clothing style is inappropriate for his shop. He tells them that they have to wear proper clothes. He specifically said, “Girls, this isn’t the beach”. This was done in public, the girls felt embarrassed and started blushing. Sammy didn’t agree with his boss. His boss even asked Sammy to cancel the purchase from the girls, but Sammy refused to do that. After that he told the boss that “he quit”. His boss was surprised because he is a friend of Sammy’s parents. His parents would probably be disappointed if Sammy quit. But Sammy thought that doing the right thing is more important than having a stable income to support himself. So to sum this up: Sammy quit his job because he didn’t agree with his boss about the policy of clothes.

BeantwoordenVerwijderen1. Explain how this story argues for what we call "freedom of dress". Do you agree with this argument? Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide?
I believe that “freedom of dress” is an important right, nevertheless, while having the freedom to wear anything you wish is important, it is also important to avoid making anybody else feel uncomfortable. A society can only function if all members can live well together, maintaining personal freedom, but also keeping themselves in check for the benefit of a community. An example of this can be found in the story “A&P” where the shop owner asks three girls who enter in bikinis to wear appropriate clothing the next time they go to the shop. On the one hand, it looks like Lengel – the shop manager – is limiting the girls in their behaviour, which contradicts “freedom of dress”. On the other hand, if other people feel awkward because of what they are wearing, they are also having a negative impact on others. This suggests that any freedom should be considered from two angles: the freedom of the person to make their own choices, but also the unwanted negative effect those choices may have on people around them.
I like that you approach the theme "freedom of dress" from two sides. And I like the way you use your words. I also like that you don't really give your opinion, but that you say that you have to see it from two sides.

In my opinion people are allowed to choose what they want to wear. However, there are certain limits. And for some occasions you should think about what you are going to wear.
For instance: imagine you are heading to a funeral. You are free to wear whatever you want. But is it respectful to wear a really festive shirt or dress in a group of grieving people? Probably not. When you are going to the shopping mall, or to the cinema, you can wear what you want. But you’ll have to be dressed properly. Otherwise you’d probably harass the rules in your mall or cinema.
This is my opinion because we live in a free land in which we are allowed to wear whatever we want. However, at public areas and occasions there are policies, clothing etiquettes and rules about what you should wear. At home, you are free to wear whatever you want.
I totally agree with Julian's point of view. In my opinion you indeed have to be respectful towards others. we live in a society which gives us the freedom of dress but in a society you also have to think about other people's feelings. But in your own time you can wear whatever you want to wear. I don't think you would hurt other's feelings or disrespect someone if you wear bathing suits to a grocery shop. It would look a bit weird but it isn't a disaster.

I definitely agree with you, I think you’ve made an excellent point. I think you are completely correct when you say that you can wear what you want at home but in public areas you should comply with the clothing requirements and even if there aren’t any clothing requirements you should respect other people their feelings and think about if you might hurt or disrespect anyone. Your example of a funeral made your point very clear. It showed very well that you sometimes should think about other people instead of just yourself and it isn’t always possible to wear whatever you want.

1. Explain how this story argues for what we call "freedom of dress". Do you agree with this argument? Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide?
In my opinion you should wear whatever you want but there are some rules/agreements. For instance, when you go to work you should wear what your boss told you to wear. It will be weird when you show up at work in your pajamas while all your colleagues have suites on. At home you can decide what you can wear by yourself according to me, but on streets it´s different. You can´t show up naked on street. When you’re in a restaurant you should decide by yourself what you wear but it needs to appropriate enough (depends on the kind of restaurant you at). In the story the 3 girls wear bikini’s and bathing suits in the store, in my opinion that’s not appropriate (close to where I live it’s not even accepted to wear bathing suits and bikinis in the grocery stores). Sammy’s boss thought the same thing but he could also have said that they are not allowed to wear bathing suits in his store but for now let them go. This shows that there are rules for what you wear and freedom of dress is not everywhere used.

This shows that the standards are very different between now and then. If you walk through a store without a shirt on people wouldn’t even look up strange and it is legal. People would find it embarrassing in that time, because you see a lot more skin then you used to. I think that you should be able to do this because you also can see this on the beach, so why would it be weird if you see it in a supermarket?

I believe that not having your shoulders covered wasn't illegal in that time. It says that the store policy is to always have your shoulders covered. That means that it's against the rules of the store, not against the law. So it wasn't illegal.

-Explain how this story argues for what we call "freedom of dress". Do you agree with this argument? Do people need to be told what to wear? If so, who gets to decide?
In my opinion, this story has two sides. First of all I think you don’t always have the freedom to dress like you want to. We have our limits. For example you can’t go naked on the streets or going to a funeral with happy and striking clothes. Even if you want to, sometimes you can’t. another thing is when you go shopping, not every store wants you to wear bathing suits. They can say something about it and let you go back outside and I would understand this if it is happening to someone.
Secondly, you should wear what you like to wear. I think you have only one thing you like to wear and that is a bathing suit. Choose other clothes which are applicable. Of course you have the say about what you wear and how, but there are some rules and you have to follow/accept them. This is written a couple of decades ago, so people thought different about this in that time. they found it really strange in that time if you showed multiple parts of your skin. Nowadays we also have our thoughts about is but we look different to it.
This shows that we changed in a social way and it is effective to us, we want to wear what we like. People have different thoughts about it and we have to accept that, but you also have to accept the rules we have and fit in this. Don’t make this a big thing or problem and live how you want to.
I don't totally understand the sentence "I think you have only one thing you like to wear and that is a bathing suit". Is this meant for the reader or did you accidentically write down a wrong sentence. Because I would way rather wear a pair of dungarees than a bathing suit.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn this story “freedom of dress” is really important, “freedom of dress” means that everyone has to be able to wear whatever they want and whenever they want to. I agree with this because it’s important that you can wear whatever you want, but in my opinion it has to stay appropriate. For example you can’t just go to a highly professional meeting in your short pants with slippers and a t-shirt.
In this story ‘freedom of dress” plays a role because of the 3 girls who entered a supermarket in their bikini, which isn’t that appropriate. Sammy quit his job because he thought it wasn’t fair that those girls were send out of the supermarket because they were wearing a bikini, I think it’s a little bit overdone to quit your job right away, you could say something about it to your boss. I do think that the story was written or is written about some time back because nowadays it’s less of a problem to wear anything you want.
My opinion is that you shouldn’t be told what to wear, because it’s is important that you can feel comfortable and that you can wear whatever you want. So I agree that everyone should wear whatever you want whenever you want but you should think about the position you’re in like the highly professional meeting

When you read the story about Sammy and the three girls at the A&P you will find out there are three girl who are wearing bikini’s when going to the supermarket, in my opinion this is inappropriate, not everyone is willing to see you wearing just a bikini. You can wear whatever you want at home, but when you’re around other people you can also wear what you want but with some boundaries. Let’s take me going to school as an example, I also can’t come to school with just wearing a bikini, I will probably be send back to home for inappropriate clothing, or when you’re a police officer you can’t wear your pajamas to work, because some people won’t take you serious as a police officer. Besides that I don’t think your boss will be happy. My example shows you can’t always wear whatever you want wherever you want, you sometimes should think about the rest of the people who are going to see you and which impression you want to leave behind.
I do not really agree with your opinion, because you said that you can not wear whatever you want because it may look inappropriate but the law does not state what you said. I think you can wear whatever you want and you should not care what other people think of you. (you also got some spelling mistakes in your blog)

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn this story “Freedom of dress” is a very important topic. Because clothes is a very important subject in this story. I think what they mean by freedom of dress is that you have the freedom to wear whatever you want whenever you want. I think that is absolutely true.
In my opinion you should wear whatever makes you happy and feel comfortable. But in some situations you should wear things that are appropriate for that exact situation. For example the three girls walked in the supermarket wearing bikini’s, which is not very appropriate for in a supermarket. If you are going to your work, and you work in a very professional business company you are not just going to wear shorts and a casual shirt.
I personally don’t think one person gets to decide what is appropriate and what you should wear to work for example. I think it should be multiple people, for example your coworkers. But I don’t mean they should decide what you wear but kind of let you know what kind of “dress code for the occasion”. Because I still think that “Freedom of dress” is really important.

In my opinion in this story there is no” freedom of dress” while I think there should be freedom of dress. Maybe you can’t always where what you want everywhere u want, because in some places it is very inappropriate to where some types of clothes or showing much skin. That there is no freedom of dress in the story can for example been seen about how the owner reacts, his reaction is that it is very weird and inappropriate what the girls are wearing, that’s also why he sends the girls away. Arguably is why Sammy quit his job. Did he did it because of the girls? Or did he did it because of his boss? In my opinion Sammy just did it because of the girls. For example at the end he said that he hoped the girls heard what he said and that he hoped they waited for him. We also can see how the time then was, for people it was very weird to see girls showing skin, and that there where strict rules about what to wear. I think a theme of the story is: standing up for your ideas. Because Sammy stand up for the girls because he didn’t think that the rules where fair.
A review of A&P
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA story posted by John Updike.
In the story that John Updike wrote it was very hard to miss the fact that the three girls were walking in just bathing clothing and if you did miss it I would be worried about your eyesight. A lot of people in the story did not like the fact that they were half naked, but it really shows how people are kind of obliged to dress a certain way. Most say that, quote on quote, “You should dress appropriately”, but what they are trying to say is: I do not want to feel uncomfortable around you because of the way you dress. I think we should not be so closed off by things we do not like. Things like school or listening in class… or maybe that is just me. Regardless of how uncomfortable you may feel a person still allowed to dress the way they want. Now I am not saying that you shouldn’t think or say something about it, if you do feel out of place or uncomfortable, just say it, maybe they’ll change and maybe they don’t. Also I am certainly not saying we should not have any boundaries. Just don’t run naked over a soccer field, regardless of how much a fan you are.
In my opinion everybody should have the legal right to dress however they want. For example: when someone feels very shy and modest in clothes that were decided by a dress code or opinions, but they feel very empowered while wearing the tank top they like so much or when they wear their favourite shorts.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI think that the girls in this book wore something that was maybe unacceptable for the time they lived in. But if I think about it right now. I think that they were very brave and that they simply ignored the ridiculous dress standards of that time.
In that time people thought that it was decided for women what they could wear, where or when. This shows why the people in the shop were so shocked to see three women who were only wearing bikini’s entering the shop. But if you would see three women in bikini’s entering a shop that is near the beach today, you would think it’s normal. This shows the change of dress codes over time.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis story is about a store clerk at the A&P a supermarket in Amerika, who in an instant decided to quit his job. His reason for doing this seems to be the way his manager treats three girls visiting the store. The manager a “Sunday school teacher” does not appreciate the way the girls are dressed. He tells them the bathing suits they are wearing are not decent enough for visiting his store, the policy is your shoulders should be covered. The way he talks to the girls is perceived to be offensive by “Sammy” our store clerk.
The real reason Sammy decides to quit his job is not clear, it could be his boss is demeaning, old fashioned and mean, he might feel trapped in his boring and repetitive job, it could be the girls flaunting their freedom to do and wear what they want or maybe he hopes to score a date with “the queen of the girls”.
After quitting, Sammy walks out the store looking for “his girls” that are nowhere to be found. He looks back thru the window seeing the “sheep being checked thru by his old manager”, he pounders how hard the world was going to be for him now he’s made the decision to quick his job without having something to fall back on. Jhon Updikes true intentions about Sammy’s decision are not clear, but that’s what makes the story interesting.

Question 1;
A&P by John Updike is in a way an argument for freedom of dress, as it shows three girls in swimsuits walking into a grocery store and inevitably getting addressed by the old-timer manager Lengel. Nowadays, this doesn’t happen all that often as freedom of dress means you can wear whatever you want as long as you don’t disturb or bother anyone with your (lack of) clothing. Also, there’s less old fashioned store managers whom get really bothered by your clothing. The writer (John Updike) clearly thinks that freedom of dress is a good thing, this is shown through the main protagonist, Sammy (who is depicted in the first person) who stands up against his manager by quitting his job to support the girls in an indirect and vague way, as it is not entirely clear what Sammy’s intentions were in the end.

2. Why did Sammy quit his job?
In my opinion Sammy quits his job because he did not like the way Lengel prejudges the girls. This is shown when the three are walking into the store and everyone is looking at them, because they are wearing bathing suits. When they want to check-out, the manager just walks up to them and basically says that they can’t wear bathing suits in a grocery store. I think that is really rude. Nowadays people wear whatever they want, wherever they want. I know that was different in that time period, but I still think that people, even in that time period, don’t have to judge others choices. This technique is used to make you realize that people decide things for you. In this case, Lengel are the people around you and the three girls are you. Don’t let people decide for you, make your own decisions.
By the way, I did hand it in in time, but something went wrong.
VerwijderenIn my opinion, you didn't completely answer the question. You start with talking about why Lengel quit his job, but suddenly continue with you own opinion. Instead of writing "I think that is really rude" you should have talked about why he thought it was rude.
