Historical Context
Feminist literature, both fiction and non-fiction, supports feminist goals for the equal rights of women in their economic, social, civic, and political status relative to men. Such literature dates back to the 15th century (The Tale of Joan of Arc by Christine de Pisan), Mary Wollstonecraft in the 18th century, Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Perkins Gilman, and Louisa May Alcott. Kate Chopin's best known novel, The Awakening (1899) and Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's A New England Nun (1891) led the emerging modern feminist literary movement into the 20th century, during which women earned the right to vote, fought for economic, social, political, educational, and reproductive rights with Gloria Steinem and the Women's Liberation Movement. The 21st century has brought a resurgence of interest in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Talewith a new streaming video series, and the Women's March After President Trump's Inauguration (2017) drew more than a million protesters in cities throughout the country and world.
It's helpful to know the list of grievances and demands a group of activitists (mostly women) published in The Declaration of Sentiments in 1848. Principal author and first women's conference organizer was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with high-profile support from abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Many more struggles and attempts to change public opinion followed the conference; it took 72 more years for women to secure the right to vote.

Today I’ll be answering the question “Can this be considered a work of feminist literature?”
In my opinion, this novel(?) can most definitely be called a work of feminist literature, as it’s mainly about a woman called Mrs. Mallard, who has been known to suffer from hart disease whom presumably, just lost her husband to a railroad disaster. I say this, because to me it’s unclear whether or not the husband has actually died.
Anyway, yes you can call this a work of feminist literature as the main protagonist is a woman, the story is about how a woman handles the loss of her loved one (although the story does lean towards Mrs. Mallard’s husband being one of the abusive ones) and how other people would react to a woman’s grieving.
Meghan Edelenbos, ctv3b
VerwijderenI think your blog post is a bit messy. I mainly think this because you didn't really understand the plot of the story (that is what I made up from your blog post). In my opinion the plot of the story is that the protagonist was finally free after the dead of her husband. Which explains that she didn't have a lot to say in her life (this conclusion can eventually lead to your conclusion that this is a feminist literature). I especially disagree with the sentence: "Anyway, yes you can call this a work of feminist literature as the main protagonist is a woman..." In my opinion you can't immediately call a story a feminist literature if the protagonist is a woman.

I’ll be answering the question: Can the story of an hour story be considered a work of feminist literature? At first, what is feminism? Well feminism means that the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. If you compare this to the story, I think that it is a kind of feminist literature but not really as extreme as it could been nowadays. Either way, it’s still a bit of feminism.
I think so because when Mrs. Mallard has been told that her husband died, she was almost happy, because she was now free and not overshadowed by her husband and his rights. But then when Mrs. Mallard went downstairs she saw husband walking in without knowing everybody thinking he died. Everybody thought she died from happiness, because of her weak hart, but as readers of this story, we know that she, ironically enough, died from sadness. I think this is a little step in the way to feminism and that’s, to my opinion why this is feminist literature.
I agree with your point of view on this topic, although I disagree on the cause of death from Mrs. Mallard. I think she died because of the shock of seeing a presumed dead man, not from sadness.

I’m going to discuss the question: can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
Feminism is for women to be treated equally and have the same rights as men.
In my opinion this story does discuss this topic and it can be called a work of feminist literature.
This is shown when Mrs Mallard gets the news about her husband whom she just ‘lost’ but she still feels happy about this. The reason for this is because she didn’t feel equal to her husband and he told her what to do. When she hears about the news of her husband she finally feels ‘free’ to make her own decisions. Near the end of the story she realises her husband isn’t dead and feels like she lost all her ‘power’. This shows that the story indeed is about feminism.

In the 19th century the view on feminism was much different than the once we have now. The feminists in that time didn’t necessarily want equal rights they were more keen on striving for independence. Because the women from that time were much more closed of the world and since many men thought they could only care for children, the women from that weren’t allowed to do much at all.
If people would have read this story in that era, it would definitely have been a piece of feminist literature. But nowadays the view of feminist has changed a lot. They now don’t strive for independence or equal rights but now they just straight want that women have everything equal as men. No don’t get me wrong I am all for equality and most normal women would be as well, but feminism as become so extreme that nowadays, if you were to read this little story, it would have been considered a great story and wouldn’t have been connected with feminism in the slightest.

Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature? In my opinion the story of an hour can be considered a work of feminist literature. A feminist story means that men and women have equal rights in the story. I think that the story of one hour is really a feminist literature. An example of this is that the woman, Josephine, loses her husband. She is not really sad, because she can easily let him go and she screams that she is free. This means that she is strong enough to handle his death, which some people don’t expect from women. I don’t really know why, but some people think that women have a harder time to let go of a death person than men do. This story shows that the woman can handle the death of a person just like some people think that men do, because she is finally free.
i partly agree with you, because this could totally be a meaning of a feminist story, but I think you didn't explain well enough why she can handle this so easy and why she is strong enough to let him go.

The story of an hour can be considered as a way of feminist literature in my opinion. Feminist literature should support feminism in any way, which this story does in its own way. Feminism supports people fighting for equal rights between women and men. The story of an hour is about a woman who thinks her husband has died in a car accident. The woman was pretty happy about the fact that her husband died, now she was finally able to live in peace and having full power over herself, which shows us there is feminism in the story. Later in the story you will find out her husband hadn’t died in a car accident. As we know Mrs. Mallard had a heart condition, when she saw her husband walking through that door she died, which I think happened because she realized she had lost all her power again.

BeantwoordenVerwijderen1. Feminism means that women and men are treated the same and have the same rights. So now we know this, can the story be considered a work of feminist literature? In my opinion it can.
This is shown when the protagonist in this story, Louise, isn’t having a lot of trouble with the news that her husband died. She is really happy instead of being sad. This is because she can finally make her own decisions and is finally ‘free’. “There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. “ But when she came downstairs and saw her husband opening the door, she felt like she lost all her power. In the last sentence it is made clear that she died: “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills.” A lot of people may think that she died of happiness, because her husband didn’t die. But in my opinion it means that she died of sadness, because her husband is still alive and she didn’t feel ‘free’ anymore.
This shows that because Louise was so happy that she was finally ‘free’ and could make her own decisions, she didn’t have a lot to say in her life with her husband. That’s why it can indeed be considered a work of feminist literature.

In this blog, I am going to discuss the question: Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
Feminism means that women fight for having the same rights and are equally treated as men. In my opinion, this story can be considered as a work of feminist literature. I think this because the woman, Louise, was really relieved when she thought that her husband had died. She felt that she was finally free and that she could start her own life. She didn’t have to listen to her husband anymore, she could just do whatever she wanted and make up her own rules. Before her husband died, she really had a lot of pressure because of him. In the 19th century, women had to do a lot for their husband. They just had to do everything he wanted, they couldn’t live their own life. I think that it is really extreme that she was so relieved and happy that her husband died. This indicates how unhappy she was feeling when her husband was still alive. Another thing is that she died when she found out that her husband didn’t die. It was known that she had heart problems but it also could’ve been the fact that she was so shocked and unhappy that she had to go back to her old life. She was just so happy that she could finally live her own life and then it was all gone…
Because of all this, I really think that it can be considered as a feminist literature.
Can the story ‘Story of an hour’ be called a work of feminist literature? I think it can. Let me explain, in the story, you can read how Mrs. Mallard heard about the death of her husband, but wasn’t totally sad about it. In the 19th century women didn’t have a lot of rights, they weren’t allowed to make decicions on their own. They were completely depended on their husbands and couldn’t do a lot besides working in the house and cook. So I completely understand that if you have as little rights as women had back then, you could actually feel happy about the loss of your husband. It would give you the feeling of independency, of freedom. You can see that this is what she wanted when she says: “Free, free, free!”. This indicates that she actually wanted freedom which, among other things, makes me believe this story is a work of feminist literature.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 1: Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI don’t think that this story is feminist and if it was, it wouldn’t be a very good piece of feminist literature.
Feminism is about the social , economic and political equality of the sexes, it’s also about relieving women from oppression. The story is about a woman who was “oppressed” by her man, if it could even be considered oppression because you don’t know if she was truly oppressed or if that was just the way she felt. It´s unclear how this relates back to women in general, it is foolish to assume that all women feel that way and would react the same way to the death of their husband, I even dare to say that it would be sexist to make such a claim because you are implying that all women are controlled by some sort of hive mind.
The story does contain some vaguely feministic themes but it doesn’t make a clear statement about the main points and propositions of feminism and it’s not an example of inequality based on gender, therefore I say that it is not a feminist piece of literature.

In my opinion, this story about a woman with heart problems living in the 19th century, Louise Mallard can indeed be considered feminist literature, because of the rather extreme end of the story: her death.
Louises abusive husband most likely died in a train accident, and after the shock, she is glad she is finally free. This shows how badly her husband treated her and how unhappy she was. When Louise heard the news of her husbands death, she was euforic. Partly due this, she was extremely shocked by the fact her husband was not dead, and didn’t even know about the accident. The shock caused her heart to stop. She wanted to be free so bad, that she died of the idea not being free. I think this shows that this story is feminist literature, and that it makes people think about how awful women were treated, and that nowadays women still aren’t completely equal to men.
Nobody is completey equal to anybody else and striving for that would lead unsolvable problems. Women, in the western world are socially, politically, and economically equal to men. In other parts of the world that's a different story.

I am going to discuss if “The Story Of An Hour” by Kate Chopin, could be considered a work of feminist literature.
First of all, what is this story about?
It mainly is about Mrs. Mallard, who heard her husband died in an accident involving a train.
She wept about his death. But then realized she was finally free. He “never looked save with love upon her”.
Later in the novel, her -dead- husband just walked into the room.
Mrs. Mallard died of the shock of seeing her (clearly not) dead husband. This was fatal to her because she had a heart disease.
In my opinion this work of literature would be considered feminist. I think this Because Mrs. Mallard got to realize that she could stand up for her own, and live her life as a free woman. Free, because she did not have anyone who she was forced to agree with anymore. In feminism it’s about women being able to stand up for their self, you can see that in this story.

Today I’m gonna discuss if the story of an hour is considered feminist literature. But first I’m going to explain what feminism is. The word feminism means: ‘’movement that fights for equal rights for women’’. In my opinion, the story of an hour is considered feminist literature. This is shown when Louise Mallard hears her husband, Brently Mallard, is dead. She isn’t sad, like most people, but happy. She keeps telling herself that she is free now. In that time, women had to do everything around the house, and men had to make money by working. But she had a bad heart. When she heard her husband was dead, she was happy and had nothing to worry about. But when she came downstairs, the door opened and her ‘dead’ husband stood there. Then she died of a heart attack. I think she died because of her bad heart but also because she thought that she was free. This shows that this story is feminist literature.

The question of this assignment is; “can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?” Feminism means that woman have the same rights and should be treated like men. As I see it the story can be considered as a feminist literature.
In the story the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard lived with her husband, after a sudden death of her husband she first feels overwhelmed, but throughout the story her feelings about her passed away husband change. They change into happiness because now she could have freedom and her husband wouldn’t have any power over her, she could do the things she wants to without any permission of her husband needed. And this is how I think about feminism, having freedom as a woman and having equal rights.
In the end of the story Brently Mallard stands in front of the door and Mrs. Mallard dies of a heart attack. I would say that Mrs. Mallard died because she was overwhelmed by the feeling that the freedom she temporarily had would be gone is a second.
I consider this story as feminist literature because Mrs. Mallard was really happy that she could finally be free and make her own decisions.

I’m going to compare two stories written by Kate Chopin; ‘The Story of An Hour’ and ‘Emancipation: A Life Fable’.
‘The Story of An Hour’ is about a woman, Mrs. Mallard. Her sister told her that her husband had died in an accident. She cried and went to her room. There she realizes that she’s free, she doesn’t have to live for anyone, she can live for herself.
The other story, ‘Emancipation: A Life Fable’ is about an animal trapped in a cage. The ones who kept him there took good care of him. The animal had everything he needed, except freedom.
Mrs. Mallard and the animal were, in my opinion, in some way in a comparable situation. Mrs. Mallard was married and the animal was trapped. The woman saw her opportunity to live as a free woman after she heard her husband had passed away and when the door of the cage was left open, the animal escaped to be free. Somehow they both wanted freedom but didn’t notice because they had everything they needed, until they got an opportunity. This shows that the theme in both stories is freedom.
So indirectly you say that marriage and being trapped in a cage is comperable? Marriage is 2 people being together because they like eachother and being an animal trapped in a cage is probably for a reason. I don't see the similarity between those two.
VerwijderenI meant that some people get married because they're forced to so they don't have that freedom. Apperantly she was kind of happy her husband died and she was free so did she really love him? I mean I think if you really love your husband and he would pass away I don't think you would feel free and happy so sooon.
VerwijderenI think you’ve done a great job, and I can definitely see your comparison. You’ve compared those two stories in a great way, and what you’re saying does make sense. You have described very well why you think those stories are a bit similar, which you’ve showed through linking parts of ‘’the story of an hour’’ with ‘Emancipation: A Life Fable’.

I think ‘story of an hour’ is considered feminist literature because the story focusses on the joy and bright feeling Mrs. Mallard experiences because her husband died. In the 19th century, a women was very dependent on her husband. When wanting to decide something by yourself, you will be seen as an out of control wife. “free! Body and soul free!” From this sentence you can conclude that she now wasn’t only able to ‘use her body’, and move by herself and so what she wanted to do, but she now also was able to think, ‘use her soul’, by herself, with no husband or society in general holding her back. The main focus of feminist of that time was to be more independent. These things show that the story is considered feminist literature because it tells how a women can be very happy by the idea of not having a husband anymore and being independent.

Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
My opinion is that this short story can be considered as feminist literature because feminism is about equality between men and women. In this text the woman feels like she is a repressed housewife, but suddenly her husband died according to the newspaper. By the time she knew this she actually felt kind of happy about this. She feels free and thinks she could life her own life. But then her husband showed up and everything fell apart. She died because of an unknown reason, it could have been her heart disease, the scare of going back to her old oppressed life or even the feeling of shame that she felt happy about the death of her husband. In my perspective this makes it a feminist text because the author wants to show the people that some women are living a life in which they’re according to for example their husband not equal to men.

In the following blog post I will be discussing the question whether this story can be considered feminist literature or not. To be able to answer this question it is important to have some knowledge about feminism, especially in the 19th century. Feminism is a range of actions used to achieve equal rights for men and women. But in the 19th century it was unthinkable for women to have the same rights as men.
I think this piece of literature would be considered feminist literature in the 19th century, but it would not be considered that in the present. This is because feminism has changed over time. In the 19th century women had (about) no rights, but nowadays women are more or less equal to men. In the story Mrs Mallard feels like her will is bended by her husband. This suggests that the author wrote the piece to be feminist literature, but because the problems portrayed in the story are (more or less) solved, I think this piece has more historical than feminist bonds nowadays. It’s more about feminism in the past than in the present. Which is why I think this story was written as a piece of feminism, but has changed in a piece of history.
I think it is really nice how you mention the differences between feminism now and feminism in the 19th century , and that you base your answer on both type of feminisms.

I would say: definitely yes. But why? Because Mrs. Mallard was close to happy, which she isn’t supposed to be because she is told that her husband died. From her perspective, she thought she was free after her husband didn’t come home anymore, which is true, but when her husband treated her in the right way and gave her all the rights he had she wouldn’t feel how she feels back then when her husband didn’t come home. She would be sad, because there was a high chance that they had a good bond otherwise they wouldn’t be married. But then he came home and on the spot she died. ‘’ she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills.’’ But did she enjoyed him coming home again? I think not because of the previous point. My point is that she didn’t die of joy but of a kind of disappointment, her body thought she was free, but then he suddenly came home and she died because her body was didn’t expected that. So to clarify my answer on the question: according to me it is feminist literature because she wasn’t happy when her husband come home again probably because he thought he was superior and women have less, to almost no rights.

In my opinion the stories look a little bit the same. In both stories the main character is in a confined space and looks outside, which symbolizes freedom and opportunities.
We know this because both main characters, so the animal and Mrs. Mallard, looked outside and both realised the same thing. The animal was born in a cage and had never been out of the cage. It was very curious about the world outside the cage. So when it had the opportunity to go into the ‘real’ world it discovered many things it had never seen before. It now had freedom and opportunities. This is quite similar in the other story. Mrs Mallard saw a blue sky, trees, birds and clouds. She saw opportunities for a new life despite her sad feelings about the loss of her husband. The open window provided a bright and clear view outside, but also to Mrs. Mallard’s bright future. She saw a future of independence, a life full of joy as she no longer had to take Mr Mallard into account. She realised she now had freedom and chances.
This shows that when the main character looks outside, in both cases, they realise that they can have a life with a lot of freedom and possibilities

In the 19th century women almost had no rights, the man was superior in marriage but also in society and in daily life. Men could work and earn money while women had to stay home, take care of the children and also doing the cleaning and cooking.
In “The story of an hour” Louise Mallard is the protagonist and hears that her husband died. In my opinion the story can be considered as feminist literature because it shows that Mrs. Mallard was repressed by her husband. When she heard she was a widow she felt liberated. Even word ‘free’ began to haunt her mind, free from oppression and repression. The death of her husband didn’t give her more rights but it did give her more freedom. This is in my opinion a feminist aspect of the story. Another feminist aspect is that the author wants to express that some women were living in a world where men were actually holding women under their power.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenComparing ‘The story of an hour’ and ‘A life fable’.
When you compare the stories, you can tell that they look the same. What the stories have in common, is that both protagonists come to know freedom.
The animal from the story ‘A life fable’ was born in a cage. There was a door from bars where light came through. After a while, the door was openend. The animal slowly walked out the cage because it was curious about the world outside. It saw more light than before and discovered there was a lot more than only the cage. The animal felt really happy.
After mrs. Mallard’s (main character of the story ‘The story of an hour”) husband died, an invisible door openend for her as well. First she was a bit sad, but then she looked outside and saw the blue sky and the free birds. Then she noticed that there were more opportunities and that she was free. She felt really happy too.
So the main characters of the stories both ‘looked outside’ which symbolizes freedom.
Lenka Verheijen
VerwijderenI fully agree with you. I think you have compared the 2 stories very well and found the right similarities. I agree with you when you say: “So the main characters of the stories both ‘looked outside’ which symbolizes freedom.”, but I also think that it symbolizes having opportunities. When the animal gets out of the cage it has a whole world to discover, with many things it had never seen before. Mrs. Mallard saw a whole new life with new opportunities, despite her sad feelings about the loss of Mr. Mallard. That is why I think the stories don't only symbolize freedom in the sense of being able to do whatever you want, but they now also have the possibility to make long term choices that will change the rest of their lives.
The story of an hour
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion this story can be considered as a work of feminist literature, because shortly after Mrs. Mallard had mourned about her husband’s death she realized that she now has much more freedom in mind and body than she had before. I think that feminism is about being equal to men, but also about making your own choices and not having to depend on men in life. Her sudden happiness leads me to thinking that she thought that she didn’t have to depend on a man anymore and is now finally able to make own decisions in life, that is in my opinion what feminism is about.
Of course, in the past a lot of women depended on their husbands, because women weren’t a lowed to work or to fend for themselves. There were women in the past that didn’t want to marry a man, these women didn’t really have a choice in that matter. They had to marry a man because there was practically no other way of surviving in a world where only men are a lowed to make decisions. I think that Mrs. Mallard had only married this man because there was no other choice and no other way of surviving in that society. Therefore, she might have had an unhappy marriage.
Arguably she might have gotten a heart attack because she couldn’t go back to the way it was when her husband was still alive, because I think that in the short time that she thought that her husband was dead she had realized how unhappy and oppressed she had felt in his presence. It might be that she had realized in that short time how empowered she felt and even happy in a certain way.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI think that this story can definitely be seen as feminist literature. This because of a few things I noticed. But first you should know that feminism is about women and men being equal and having the same rights.
Something I noticed is the moment Mrs. Mallard is sitting in a chair staring out the window, she just heard that her husband died. She is completely lost in her own thoughts. One of these thoughts is that she now finally has freedom. She now has a future that will focus on her. She feels enlightened and free. In the coming years she can do whatever she wants whenever she wants, without having to think about her husband.
But the most clear thing I saw is the moment when Mr. Mallard walks inside his own house, with no idea of what just happened. Mrs Mallard and Josephine were walking down the chairs, when they saw him come in. Once Mrs. Mallard sees her husband she’s shocked. Her whole future full of freedom goes away in that one tiny moment. And her already fragile heart can’t bear this, she dies.
She dies because her husband is alive and thus her freedom is taken away, this concludes that she must have had nothing to say and always had to listen to her husband, so she had no rights at all. This is why I think it’s feminist literature.
I completely agree with you. Some people think Mrs. Mallard died because of the shock her husband was alive while she thought he was gone, so she couldn’t understand what happened which is the reason why she died. My opinion is the same as yours, which is that she died because she was upset about the fact she had lost all her power again. Your example makes it clear why you think the woman died.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan the story of an hour be considered a work of feminist literature?
It can definitely be considered feminist literature. In the beginning we find out that Mrs. Mallard has heart trouble. When her family sees that her husband has been killed in a railroad accident, they have to be careful how to say the news to her. “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms.” That makes you feel like she really is sad now that her husband is gone. You can also make out of this that her marriage wasn’t horribly bad or abusive. Later she is sitting in front of an open window. This symbolically stands for an opening to new things she can do now that her husband is gone. She started to feel happier about her husband being gone because now that he isn’t here anymore she isn’t treated less worthy than she is. Feminism means that women are treated equally to men. This doesn’t happen in this story and definitely not in the time it was written in.
I like the paragraph but I still miss a deeper meaning of what feminism looked like in the 19th century.

Can the story -The story of an hour written by Kate Chopin- be considered a work of feminist literature?
In my opinion the story can be considered a work of feminist literature. If a story contains feminist literature it is a story that talks about equal rights for women compared to men.
The evidence for this is that this sory is written back in the 19th century in that time there weren’t equal rights for women compared to men. In this story Mrs. Mallard hears that her husband died. First she was devastated from it, she ran to her room and cried but after some time she started to feel happier because she realized she was free: "free, free, free!" she said. She said this because she now didn’t have to do what her husband told her to do, she realised she could do what she wanted. For me this says that she did not have the same rights as her husband. She was so joyful of this feeling. All in a sudden someone opened the door, it was her husband, Bentley Mallard. Mrs. Mallard died. Why? Because she had a heart disease?. I think her bad heart wasn’t the only cause. First she was so joyful and when her husband entered the house again she was so shocked and afraid that she would lose her freedom, her heart couldn’t keep it al and that’s why she died. The fact that she was so unjoyful that her husband was back is for me enough to say that this story wanted to make clear that there needed to be equal rights for women compared to man.
This shows that the story of an hour written by Kate Chopin can be considered a work of feminist literature.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan this story be considered as a work of feminist literature?
In my opinion this story is partly a work of feminist literature. The story shows that women have to do all the work for the men. But when Brently Mallard ‘died’, she was kind of happy because she didn’t have to do all the work for her husband anymore.
This can be seen when she whispered "Free! Body and soul free!" the whole time. But when her husband came home she was shocked. She couldn’t handle it anymore because of her positive reaction to Brently’s death. So, I think that is the reason why she was dead.
The writer has shown that women didn’t have rights in those days. She was happy with the death of their husband because she felt free and wasn’t influenced by her husband.

VerwijderenI agree with you about the fact that Mrs. Mallard felt free when she thought her husband died. But I don’t think it’s because she always had to do all the work for him. Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature? I think this story can be considered a feminist literature.
This can be shown when Mrs. Mallard is strangely happy when she finds out her husband died. She keeps saying she is free. This is because in the 19th century woman had to do all the work at home. They did not have any freedom. She was happy, because she could finally do the things she wants. When she walked downstairs, someone opened the door. It’s her ‘dead’ husband. She had a bad heart, so when she saw him again she died. Out of happiness? Or was she just so surprised? I think it was because of her bad heart in combination with her feelings. She was happy but not. She was sad that she wasn’t free anymore. The combination of this killed her.
This shows that the story is a feminist literature, because she wanted to be free. Without her husband.
I think that it's very good that you used examples of the story to prove your point and added an extra question to this.

Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
At first, we have to know what feminism means. Feminism is a range of political and social movements to achieve one thing: equal rights for men and women. There’s a big difference between now and in the nineteenth century, because in the nineteenth century only men were allowed to have a public life. Women on the other hand were usually expected to stay home and care for the family.
I think that this story can be considered as a work of feminist literature. Soon after the news of her husband’s death Mrs. Mallard realised that she didn’t had to care for someone anymore, that she was free. This is seen when she whispers “Free! Body and soul free!” She suddenly recognised this possession of self-assertion as the strongest impulse of her being. The day before her husband’s “death” she had thought with shudder that life might be long. The death of her husband made her realise that she could live on her own and that she actually wanted to live on her own. This last thing is seen when she says that she would live for herself and that spring days, summer days, and all sorts of other days would be her own. After these thoughts she made a quick prayer that life might be long.
In short, Mrs. Mallard is an example of a woman who wants to be independent. Her reaction suits with the thoughts from a feminist.
It is very good that you started the blog with the meaning of feminism. You also did very well explaining your opinion.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion it can be considered as feminist literature. Mrs Mallard starts to realise she wants to make her own decisions, without someone who says what a woman should do. I think this is a good example of how feminism starts. For example, the moment Mrs Mallard hears her husband has died, she is shocked. However, some time later she feels relieved. “Free! Body and soul free!” she says. When her sister worries she could make herself ill, she replies: "Go away. I am not making myself ill." The writer then adds: “No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window.”
In other words, at first Mrs Mallard feels sad. Later she realises that she can live her own life, without her husband making decisions for her. The window in the story symbolises the world in front of her which she has not discovered yet. Previously, her husband would not have allowed her to decide for herself. Without a man making her decisions she feels happy. I think this a characteristic of the start of feminism. Women realise that they enjoy making their own decisions and accomplishing their own dreams.

In my opinion, this story can be considered as a feminist literature, because Mrs. Mallard is happy when her husband died.
This is demonstrated when Mrs. Mallard heard that her husband died. I should think that you would be very sad, but she wasn’t. Actually, she was very happy that he wasn’t in her life anymore, she finally could be free. She kept whispering body free and soul free! Because in the 19th century women stayed at home to do housework and women couldn’t say what they thought. She now could do anything what she wanted to do and has no husband who had power over her. But when someone walked into her house, she saw her ‘’dead’’ husband. When she saw her husband was alive, she couldn’t be free anymore. I think the cause of her death is her heart disease and her feeling that she isn’t free anymore.
This suggests that this story can be considered as a feminist literature, because Mrs. Mallard wants to be free with body and soul.
When you say: "I should think that you would be very happy, but she wasn't." you're saying that she wasn't sad, but in the story you can read that she became happy after grieving her husbands dead. Which indicates that she had not been happy immediately.
Verwijderenin the first sentence I mean: "I should think that you would be very sad".
VerwijderenComparison of the two stories
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhen you compare the two stories of Kate Chopin you notice that the theme in both stories is freedom. The animal, in A Life Fable, was born in a case and had known nothing else. It was cared for but it has never seen something of the world. When the door of the case was opened the animal could go outside. It showed fear at first, but it saw the sunlight, he saw the opportunity to its freedom. Mrs Mallard, the protagonist in The Story of An Hour, lived in the 19th century. Back then women didn’t have the same rights as now, you got married which gave you a roof above your head, food and hopefully a happy marriage. But you didn’t had freedom, you couldn’t start a career or see something of the world. Then the message came that her husband died. This came as a shock. But as she looks out of the window she realises that she is free. She felt happy and wanted to take the opportunities given to her. Unfortunately at the end of the story we read that her husband isn’t dead. Which is the difference between the two stories. The animal gets the chance to go outside and explore the world while Mrs Mallard died when she saw that her husband wasn’t dead.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
I don´t think this story can be considered a work of feminist literature. First of all, feminists wanted men and women to have equal rights in those days. What means that everybody would have a say. In this story it doesn’t look like women would have an advantage or benefit after this happened.
For example we look to the things Mrs. Mallard said. In her eyes, what possibly was certainly true, she thought that she did not have freedom before her man ‘’died’’. She said she was free. body and soul free. This doesn’t change the fact that outside those walls from their house, she still did not have the same equal rights as other men. Only if her man would have died, she kind of realized that she was finally free from the feeling that she did not have her man or somebody in her safe home where she would be ruled or be less important, but if her man died, he was not here anymore so you can’t be less important if there is no one else. After all here man didn’t die by a car accident but came home, so she kind of lost her strength as a person what can be why she died later on.
This shows that you can have a different view on the world. She thought she was finally free what is why she became happy, but later on it can’t be women or men. So I would say that we need each other and that everybody should have the same right as nowadays in our country. And this story just shows when women would have a bigger say and could be more free.

Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
Well, in my opinion this looks more like the beginning of feminist literature. In this story the woman was sad but also happy, because she was free, she didn’t have to obey her husband anymore. As you can see she was only happy about being free, she hadn’t thought of having the same rights as men or being able to vote.
In the end of the story the doctors told her husband that she had died of heart disease and the joyful shock of seeing her husband alive and well. That’s what the doctors believed, but if I say so myself that isn’t the case. It looks more like the shock of her dream falling apart, she wouldn’t be able to be free anymore and that caused the shock that unfortunately killed her. So basically, she had a dream of being free but it was crushed by her husband returning from work, so like I said in the beginning this looks more like a beginning of feminism.
I totually agree with you and I think you have explained well why you think that she died of this shock.

Story of an hour
Can this be considered feminist literature?
In my opinion it can not be considered as feminist literature because back in the day, feminism meant that women had to be equal to men, for example have equal rights, an equal loan and the right to vote. The fact that Louise was happy that her husband died could also be because he was abusing her. She looks through the open window and sees the open square. The repetition of the word open shows possibility and a lack of restrictions. Also, she sank into the chair by physical exhaustion, which, as i said, could mean abuse. When she walks down the stairs as a goddess of victory to the door, and she finds her man, presumed dead, on the doorstep, her heart stops working because she sees the man that possibly abused her OR because she sees a dead man alive on her doorstep. This is why i don’t think this is feminist literature.
I like your way of thinking about this story, because it is very different than other blogs and really liked your example about abuse because the story looks entirely different if you think about it like that.

Comparing ‘The story of an hour’ and ‘A life fable’.
Both stories are about the main character getting their freedom and although the characters are completely different, in a way they are quite similar. Let me elaborate on that. “The Story of an Hour” is about a woman finding out that her husband died in a crash. Instead of being sad and missing her husband she felt free and happy and although I think that she was taken good care of by her husband and the money that he made, he off course could not buy the thing she wanted the most which was freedom. In the story “Emancipation. A Life Fable” it’s about an animal growing up in a cage. The animal got greatly taken care of by his owner. He got almost everything he wanted except for one thing: freedom. But then one day the cage stood open and the animal seized his moment and got out. I think that the door of the cage and the death of Mr. Mallard are similar because they both where the thing that gave the characters there freedom therefore I also think that the theme of both stories are freedom.
I like your paragraph, you made the connection between those stories very clear. I really like your example which shows the connection between the cage of the animal and the death of Mr. Mallard. You’ve mentioned a few examples which show that ‘’The story of an hour’’ and ‘’Emancipation. A Life Fable” are comparable.

I think the story of an hour can be feminist literature. This is because of a couple of reasons, but first let me define feminist. Feminist means that male and female should have equal rights. This means that for example a woman should get equally paid for an exact same job as a man. This is still not happening in the world. Let me give you another example. Back in the day (around the 19th century), women weren’t allowed to vote. Later this got changed so women can also vote. Now back to where I was. This story can be feminist literature.
1: The woman in the story is sort of happy that her husband died. She finally feels free like she was trapped inside of her husband. She said “Free! Body and soul free!” after she read that her husband was dead.
2: Her husband came back home (not dead) and he surprised her. The woman wasn’t really happy with this. Due to her very weak heart she died. Later, some doctors came in and said she died because of heart disease. Her alive husband caused such a shock that her heart stopped working.
To conclude a woman read that her husband died, she felt happy and free. It was as if her husband kept her soul trapped and his death released it. When her husband came back, alive, she was pretty upset. This was because she felt trapped again. She had a very weak heart, which stopped working after the shock of seeing her husband. So this story can be considered feministic because she was held down by a husband who caged her soul.
I think this is a very nice paragraph, I totally agree with your conclusion, and i like the linking to the story.

The story of an hour (Kate Chopin)
I will discuss if the following story is considered as ‘feminist literature’ or not. I will first explain what feminism is in my own words to make it easier for myself and the reader. Feminism is a battle in which both sexes try to achieve equality (mainly women) because a lot of women think that they are not treated equally compared to men and think that this is not fair and they will protest and do anything they can to achieve this. In feminist literature you can see that people will try to achieve equality in a book or a poem.
I consider that ‘The story of an hour’ is feminist literature because of the following things: firstly, in the moment that she sat down on the chair and she now realizes that she is no longer looked down on because her husband is dead and she finally feels free and happy and not trapped in a cage. Secondly, she said: ‘’Free! Body and soul free!’’, she probably always felt she could not do anything in the time the story was written, only the men could work and make money and with her husband dead she did not have that feeling anymore and she thought about her bright future.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin be considered as feminist literature?
I believe that you can call Kate Chopin’s story feminist literature, when you get to know the reason for Louise’s reaction to her husband’s death.
The Story of An Hour was written in 1894, this was in the first feminist wave, meaning that women had barely any rights and that they were mainly striving to receive women’s suffrage. This may be an explanation to the fact that Louise Mallard was relieved when she felt the missing presence of the hold of her husband. These days you will find far less dominant husbands than before, the roles have become more equal. In this piece of literature you read bits of the Mallard couple’s relationship: “And yet she had loved him—sometimes. Often she had not”, “the face that had never looked save with love upon her”, “There would be no powerful will bending hers”. From this we can infer that the iron grip of her husband was not pleasant. When she dismissed the feelings that she thought she should have when hearing about her husband’s death and started to understand what had happened, she actually felt happy, free and independent. Her feelings towards what has happened show the feminism in “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe story of an hour by Kate Chopin
BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan this story be considered feminist literature? Because this story is set in the 1894 it can absolutely be considered feminist. Life was very different for women at that time. They were expected to take care of the children and their husbands. Woman spent most of their time at home, didn’t make decisions themselves. Men could do whatever they wanted and could learn and develop themselves in the work place. I can understand the joy Louise Mallard felt when she thought about how her life would be without her husband, especially since the story hints at him being abusive. I do question if her life would turn out to be so much better, she might not be able to fend for herself. If she would have to take a new husband, she would most likely end up in the same situation.
If the story was set in modern times, I would not classify it as feminism story. Now day’s if you are not happy with the relationship you are in you have the choice to end it. Staying in an abusive or toxic relationship would therefore be a very un-feminist thing to do.

Feminism is the movement which tries to achieve equal rights for women and men. I think that this can be found in “The Story of An Hour”, making it a work of feminist literature. In my opinion the reason for this is that it contains parts of 19th century feminism.
Around this time they were fighting against cultural inequities, an example is how dependent women were on their husband, because only men got paid for working. This can be seen in the story, in the following sentence: “And yet she had loved him--sometimes. Often she had not.” This suggests that she didn’t marry him because she loved him, but probably because it was her only option.
My second reason for why the story is a work of feminist literature is that it contains thoughts about how marriage really was, which wasn’t a popular topic at that moment. This can be seen in her happiness when she realizes her ‘freedom’. It wasn’t accepted to be happy about the death of your husband, and it was therefore a rebellious act of the writer to write about the joy of Mrs. Mallard. This suggests that the story was written to protest against the inequality.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCan Kate Chopin’s “Story of an hour” be considered a work of feminist literature?
In my opinion, this story can be called a work of feminist literature. Feminism means that women should have the same rights, and be treated equal to men. These days, there is a strong wave of feminism. Every day on social media, you can find people that fight for equal rights. But back in the days of Kate Chopin, it didn’t work that way. Women were housewives that were supposed to take care of their husband and children. Most of the time the husband was the most important person in the household. He made the money, so his wife should listen to him.
In the story of an hour, it works exactly this way. Mrs. Mallard had to listen to her husband, and felt trapped. But because she thought it would never change, she hid all her feelings and forgot about them. When she was told that her husband had died, and she started thinking about it, all of her feelings came back. Suddenly she was independent and she started to love it.
The story shows how housewives felt those days, and how trapped they were and that it had to change. To me, this is a work of feminist literature.

Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?
In my opinion, this can be considered as a feminist literature, because she was finally happy when she was free, what means that she lived under authority of her man and that she had nothing to say.
This is shown in the 14th paragraph: ‘Free! Body and soul free!’. Out of this peace you can make up that she finally felt free after all these years with her husband.
This shows that women had almost no rights in that time, because men had all power in that time and women had to deal with that. When her man came back she didn’t want to live with him anymore, because she had felt actual freedom.
I posted this already earlier, but I just found out that the last sentence was a bit of a mistake, so i deleted that and reposted my story.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI will answer the question: “Can this story be considered a work of feminist literature?”. My answer to this question is yes. Because the story is about Mrs. Mallard who is in my opinion a strong woman with a heart disease. In the story we can read that she finally felt free, when she heard that her husband had died. She was happy that now nobody could say what she had to do, and could live for herself. We also can read that she did not really was happy with her husband, because sometimes she didn’t love him. She wanted to be an independent woman, she was still young and as we can read also strong. Because of this we can conclude that it can be considered as feminist literature.
Question 1:
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI personally think that this story is work of feminist literature, because Feminism is about women having the same rights as men. Political and social wise. Which is the case in this story.
In the story the protagonist, Ms. Mallard, is sad about the fact that her husband suddenly dies. But her feelings change throughout the story. She starts to feel more happy about the fact that her husband died. Like she is relived, like a weight has been lift of her shoulders. In the 90’s women where expected to do what their husbands told them, which explains why she felt relieved and happy.
She can now finally do what she wants, and her life can be about her now. So I think it is a feminist literature because it has to do with the fact that women should have the same political and/or social rights as men have. If you think about the fact she was starting to feel happy and relieved about the fact that her husband died, it means that women did not have the same social rights as men.
