I think revenge is a theme in this story because Montresor wants to kill Fortunato because of all the bad things he has done to his neigbour.
For example, In the beginning of the story, Montresor tells us how he hated that Fortunato made him feel like a complete fool. He was aways mean to him, but Montresor never showed any of his pain. Now the time was finally right for Montresor to kill his biggest enemy, who had no idea that someone hated him so much for such a long time. Montresor was sick of Fortunato insulting him and he was so jealous at him for always being better and richer. Now it was finally time to take all of that away from him, that’s why he murdered him in such a bad way.
This shows that this whole story is about hating someone so much and wanting revenge.

I’m going to discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the Cask of Amontillado written by Edgar Allan Poe. This story is about a someone named Montresor and a man, Fortunato. Let’s assume Mentresor is also a man. They used to play together when they were children, but Fortunato always enjoyed making a fool of Montresor and hurt his feelings, but Montresor never showed his anger. He wanted revenge, therefore he made him think he and Fortunato were friends, but actually he wanted him dead.

One evening during carnival season he told Fortunato that he had bought a cask of Amontillado and wasn’t sure if it was real. Fortunato wanted to taste if it was real Amontillado. Montresor brought him to a small room in his cellar. There he locked him into metal handcuffs. Secondly he began to fill the doorway of the room with stones and cement and listened to him scream. There Montresor left Fortunato to die.

Mentresor wanted revenge because Fortunato hurt his feelings and made a fool of him. He waited for the right moment to get back at him. He wanted him dead so that’s why he locked him in handcuffs and left him. In my opinion that was Montresor’s revenge. This shows revenge is definitely an important theme in this story.

    3. In my opinion the theme ‘revenge’ is a really important theme in the story. Montresor wanted to kill Fortunato because he wanted revenge on him, revenge for all the things he had done to him.

For example, one of the things Fortunato had done to him was making him feel like a complete fool. Montresor hated him for always being mean to him, but he never showed how he really felt. One day he would punish Fortunato for everything he had done. And that day had come, he lured Fortunato underneath the palace by saying that he had a cask of Amontillado over there. On that late carnival evening Montresor locked Fortunato up and began to fill the doorway of the room with stones and cement. He was so done with him being more handsome, successful and richer than him that he murdered his ‘friend’ in such a painful way.

This shows that the theme ‘revenge’ is a really important theme of the story. Because the whole story is about Montresor wanting to pay back Fortunato for everything he had done to him; he took the ultimate revenge by killing Fortunato.

I’ll be answering the question: Discuss the theme 'revenge' in the Cask of Amontillado? My opinion is that it’s hard to explain if this is really revenge. This is because you speak of revenge when someone did something real bad to you or someone you know and then do something back to avenge that person. But in this story it’s not really the case.

I think so, because the story says ‘He hurt my feelings a thousand times during the years of my childhood.’ This explains that Fortunato treated Montresor badly when they were children, but not so bad that Montresor was so annoyed that he was so desperate to kill him. I of course understand that Montresor was mad about this and wanted to make that clear, but to kill him in this way is really horrible. This is why I think that explaining revenge in this story is difficult.

In my opinion revenge plays a very big role in this story.
Revenge is the deed of hurting or harming someone in response for an injury at their hands. Montresor was insulted and put to shame by Fortunato in his childhood, he never showed is anger, and even pretended to be a friend to Fortunato, but actually he smiled at the thought of Fortunato’s death.

Later in the story Montresor tells Fortunato that he/she bought a cask of Amontillado, a expensive type of sherry. He says he wants to know for sure if the wine really is Amontillado.
Fortunato’s arrogance and ego does the rest.
When they get in a small room Montresor tells Fortunato that the cask is here, then he chains Fortunato to a wall and lets him starve to death.
    Talking about a plot twist…

I think this entire story is based around revenge, even though I think this way of taking revenge may be a little exorbitant.

The Cask of Amontillado – Edgar Allan Poe

In this blog I’m going to discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the Cask of Amontillado.

In my opinion, Montresor wants to take revenge on Fortunato. You could tell because he said: ‘He did not know it was the thought of his death that made me smile’. He wanted to take revenge because Fortunato hurt his feelings a thousand times during his childhood and he enjoyed making him look like a fool.

Montresor never told Fortunato that he actually didn’t like him. He never showed his anger so Fortunato thought that they were good friends. Little did he know that later on, his own ‘friend’ would kill him. In my opinion it is weird and unfair that Montresor never told Fortunato that he didn’t like the way he was treated by him. That way, Fortunato didn’t have the chance to change his behaviour or to apologize. Because of that, Montresor’s anger grew and also his tendency to take revenge.

Eventually, Montresor takes his revenge by killing Fortunato. He wanted to let go of all his anger that he had built up for years. I think that this is very extreme because he was only jealous and humiliated. I get that you don’t like him but you don’t have to kill him.

This all shows that the theme ‘revenge’ is a big theme in the story.

In my opinion the theme ‘revenge’ is plays a big role in this story. For example the story tells us that Fortunato had been mocking Montresor since they were little. The story also says that Montresor didn’t say or do anything at that time but that he would do something bad later in his life. Montresor would have a delighted feeling everytime he thought of the death of Fortunato. But Fortunato actually thought that they were friends and he thought that the smile of Montresor was a good thing while Montresor actually thought of Fortunato’s death. He wanted to make Fortunato feel horrible. This is clear evidence of the theme revenge. Montresor was in my opinion also jealous of Fortunato. Fortunato made his life miserable and also got a better future than he did. Maybe the future that Montresor wanted. These were motives to get back at Fortunato. I think that the word ‘revenge’ might have been haunting his mind all the time when he thought of Fortunato.

Every story has its most important theme, which in this story is revenge. This story is completely based on revenge.

Montresor and Fortunato were friends when they were children. Fortunato his life had always been better than the life of Montresor. Fortunato his life was better because he was richer, bigger and more handsome, he made Montresor look like a fool. Montresor his feelings got hurt but he never told Fortunato how he actually felt. Montresor pretended all those years as a friend of Fortunato. You’re able to see that Fortunato thought they were friends by willing to taste Montresor his wine while he was on his way home. I know some people will say he just wanted to taste his wine to show he is the best, but I think there was piece of him who wanted to do it because Montresor was his friend.

In my opinion the theme revenge is shown the best when Montresor takes Fortunato to his cellar and locks him in iron handcuffs in a very small room. After he has done that, he builds wall of stones and cement around him. This shows us that the theme revenge is definitely important, without the theme revenge there wouldn’t be a story.

Discuss the theme 'revenge' in the Cask of Amontillado

In my opinion the theme revenge is an important theme in the Cask of Amontillado. Montresor wanted revenge on Fortunato. When they were younger Fortunato enjoyed making Montresor look like a fool and he hurt Montresor’s feelings a lot, so that is why Montresor wanted revenge.

This can be seen by the sentences: “I never showed my anger, however. So, he thought we were good friends. But I promised myself that one day I would punish Fortunato for his insults to me.” That day had come. Fortunato loved wine, so Montresor said to him he had bought a barrel of Amontillado wine and that he didn’t know if it really was Amontillado wine. Fortunato wanted to help him by tasting the wine. Montresor took Fortunato to his palace and they went to the basement of the palace, because Montresor said that the Amontillado wine was in his wine cellar. They walked through a room with tombs. Then they arrived in a small room and behind it there was even a smaller room with 2 iron handcuffs on the wall. Montresor locked Fortunato into the handcuffs and built a wall to block the entrance to the tiny room. When he was done he went back upstairs to his palace and he let Fortunato alone, so he died of starvation.

This shows that the biggest part of the story is about the plan of Montresor to take revenge on Fortunato, so I that is why revenge is an important theme in this story.

    1. I agree with you that revenge is an important theme, and your opinion why. However I don’t agree with how you think Fortunato died. I think that Fortunato didn’t die of starvation as you mentioned, but from a lack of oxygen. Montresor met Fortunato on the street, when he was on his way home from a carnival party. I think that he had probably eaten something there, and had definitely drunk something as he was drunk. There wasn’t a very long time between when Montresor met Fortunato and the dead of Fortunato. Therefore, in my opinion he didn’t die of starvation. But in the in the cellars Montresor built a wall from ten rows of stones, which probably caused that no oxygen could go to the small room where Fortunato was chained. So I would say that Fortunato died from a lack of oxygen.

Could it be the case that Montresor was a woman instead of a man? I think so. I believe that most people picture Montresor as a man when they read the story. This could be for various reasons: maybe it’s because they feel like only men can do such terrible things to each other, or it could be because of the fact that Montresor compares him(her)self to Fortunato.
I think that all of this isn’t true. In my opinion Montresor could just as easily be a woman. Women can do these things as well, they can also held a grudge against someone, just like men. I do feel like it can change the story if you picture a woman instead of a man. When you picture a man I’ve the idea that the story is more about jealousy, because Fortunato was richer, bigger, and married a beautiful and rich woman. But when you picture a woman I’ve the idea that the story is more about revenge, because Fortunato always hurt her feelings, insulted her and made her look like a fool. Her revenge was killing Fortunato.

    1. I totally agree with you, but 1 thing I disagree with is that you say that it's more about jealousy if Montersor is a men. I think Montresor easily could be a men, but still want his revenge because of the insults and not because ofhow much richer, bigger and more handsome he was.

    2. One thing you didn't mention is that you could assume that Montresor is a man because men are generally more aggresive than women. If you pick a random man and a random woman out of the population the man will be more aggresive 60% of the time, not a staggering difference but one that does matter when it comes to the extremes, almost all of the most aggresive people are men. Since killing someone is an extreme act of aggresion, you could assume that he is a man because they are more likely to kill.

I agree with you, Pharrell, that this could totally be the case. But the way I see it a man is more likely to compare himself to another man than a woman comparing herself to a man. That’s why in my opinion the story would be more about jealousy, because Montresor compares himself to Fortunato. However I also fully agree with the reason you said.

Yes, Siyon, I didn’t mention that indeed. To be honest I didn’t research many men were agressieve back then. But on the other hand women can be very agressive as well, and this time it could be the case that Montresor is one of the 40% when women are more agressive. This is why I, in my opinion, wouldn’t write down that men are generally more agressive than women.

  14. I think the setting of the story ‘The Cask of Amontillado” really helps to enhance the ambiance of horror the story. This can be seen by multiple things. First of all, Fortunato and The Montresor are both members of an Italian family, so we can assume the story takes place in Italy, a country which just happens to be known for stories about the mafia. Secondly, the story takes place at night, which just enchances the horror a bit more, and at last but not least, they go down into the catacombs underneath the palace of the Montresor family, which completes the the picture of a good horror story. All these elements are crucial for making this story as good as it is, just try reading the story without these elements and you’ll see that the story will be a whole lot less creepy.

In my opinion the theme of the story is revenge. Revenge is to do the same negative things or worse to someone that he or she did to you as a form of punishment. For example, in the beginning of the story the protagonist called Montresor tells us: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” Later in the story Montresor says to Fortunato: “You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was.” This shows how Montresor is not happy with what Fortunato did in the past and he is planning to take revenge and punish him for what he has done. Later Montresor says that Fortunato took all the beautiful feelings that he once had. However, because of Fortunato he does no longer have any of those beautiful feelings. He punishes Fortunato for this. So the theme revenge fits perfectly in this story.

  16. Revenge

In the beginning of the story Montresor talks Fortunato always teasing him and that this is a reason why he wants revenge. In my opinion this is not the only reason why Montresor wants revenge, when I read the story I got a strong feeling that Montresor is very jealous of Fortunato. This jealousy could have resulted in Montresor going as far as killing Fortunato.

Montresor speaks about taking his revenge on Fortunato very strongly in the story. Of course, he got all the equipment ready, but he seems unsure at one point in the story. This is demonstrated when Montresor said: "Come, we will go back upstairs. Your health is important. You are rich, respected, admired, and loved. You have a wife and children. Many people would miss you if you died. We will go back before you get seriously ill. I can go to Lucresi for help with the wine." He said this right after Fortunato had coughed, this suggests that Montresor regretted taking revenge for a little moment in this story.

These reasons show that revenge plays an important role in this story, mainly because the entire story is about why Montresor wants to get revenge and how he did it.

    3. Discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the Cask of Amontillado

I think revenge is a very prevalent theme in the story as the entire story is about a man called Montresor enacting revenge on his childhood “friend”, Fortunato, whom in reality is a really big bully to Montresor. Due to this, Montresor swears to take revenge on Fortunato for insulting him, in a rather gruesome and cruel way; first, he waits for the perfect moment, lures Fortunato into a trap whilst he’s drunk, and then buries him under his house, never to be seen or heard from again. In my opinion, this is slightly over the top as killing someone is not justified by the fact that they hurt your feelings a thousand times in your childhood.

Discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the cask of Amontillado.

Firstly, I think that the theme ‘revenge’ is definitely part of this story and I think this is maybe one of the important things about this story. Secondly, in my opinion revenge makes this story a very interesting and attractive story to read.

An example of a sentence in which you can clarify the theme revenge: ‘I smiled to myself and stopped working so that I could better enjoy listening to the noise’. This means that Montresor was enjoying the frustration of Fortunato. I totally understand Montresor, because Fortunato hurt him a lot back in the days and this is his ‘revenge’.

This shows that revenge is a big part of this story, because his whole lifetime long Fortunato bullied him and now he finally took revenge and really enjoyed it. I think that the writer did this writing technique very well, because it doesn’t directly show revenge, but if you look some deeper you will find this.

How does Poe use the setting of this story to enhance the atmosphere of horror.
Poe is a master of setting the scene in this story, you can picuture the look and even the feel of the surroundings. He starts of talking about the old Italian families they belong to. Than he goes on talking about it being one of the oldest buildings in town. He describes these cellars using words like cold, dark, damp, dark (because he had to bring a cadle for light). He tops it of mentioning its used as resting place “tombs” for death family members and moves around bones.
You can feel the horror when Fortunato finaly walks in to the little room with the handcuffs fixed in to the walls. The last bit of the story where Montresor tells us he is recalling the events happened 50 years ago adds to the horror! It means Fortunato has been buried alive and has never been found. I believe on of the worst ways to die, all alone in the dark, starving from hunger and thirst while knowing no one is able to hear or find you.

The story is called “The Cask of Amontillado”. It is about two “friends”. I’m going to answer question number three. Which means that I’m going to discuss how important the theme revenge is in this story.
I think the theme revenge is a very important topic, because Montresor takes revenge on Fortunato. Firstly, Fortunato has always been richer and bigger than Montresor. I think he therefore has always been kind of jealous of Fortunato. So he wanted to take revenge on him for that. Secondly, Montresor also mentions that Fortunato wasn’t always nice to him. He said that he picked on him and that he was teasing him all the time. It does seem odd to me that Montresor never said to Fortunato that he didn’t like the way he treated him. Because that is probably one of the reasons why Montresor had all that anger towards Fortunato. This is probably why he murdered Fortunato in such a brutal and painful way.

This shows that Montresor didn’t like Fortunato and always wanted him dead. Like he said in the story “When I smiled at him, he thought it was because we were friends. He did not know it was the thought of his death that made me smile.”.

In this blog post I will discuss the theme Revenge in ‘The Cask of Amontillado’. In my opinion Revenge is the main theme of this story. This is shown when the protagonist thinks Fortunato hurt his feelings a thousand times and that the protagonist promises himself to punish him for this insults in the begin of the story. The rest of the story is about how the protagonist is planning on punishing Fortunato and executing this plan.

This shows the theme revenge is used in this story. In fact, I think it is the most present theme in the whole story. This could be because the author based the story about this theme because he thinks it is important for people, or because he thinks people enjoy reading about this theme. In the end I think the author based the story around the theme revenge.

    3- Discuss the theme revenge

I think The Cask of Amontillado is about the tense atmosphere between two old “friends”. Fortunato and Montresor have been good friends since their childhood, but appearances are deceiving . The thought of Fortunato’s death made Montresor smile.

In the story you can read that Montresor’s feelings were hurt a thousand times. This was mostly because many times in their childhood Fortunato had made him look like a fool. Montresor, however, never showed his anger towards his “friend”. He instead promised himself that one day he would punish Fortunato for his insults towards him. In others words, he planned to take revenge someday and wanted his friend to suffer as much as he had suffered. After many years had passed, Montresor murdered Fortunato by locking him up in the wine cellar and closing off the way out with a wall of stones and cement. Fortunato first thought that Montresor made a joke, but soon discovered that his friend really wanted him to suffer. Like he had made him suffer in childhood.

This shows that revenge, which is defined as to inflict punishment in return for injury or insult, is an important theme in the story The Cask of Amontillado.

I am going to discuss the 3rd question: Discuss the theme 'revenge' in the Cask of Amontillado.
The protagonist doesn’t have a name in the story, but his surname is probably Montresor so I am going to call him/her Montresor.
“Fortunato was bigger, richer and more handsome than I was. And he enjoyed making me look like a fool. He hurt my feelings a thousand times during the years of my childhood.” This quote shows that Montresor wants revenge on Fortunato because Fortunato made Montresor look like a fool and insulted Montresor a lot.
In my opinion Montresor took it too serious but I get why Montresor wants revenge. Montresor killed Fortunato by ‘burying’ him alive in Montresor’s dark cellar, Fortunato couldn’t do anything because he was handcuffed and there wasn’t an opening in the room.
In the end of the short-story it says “That was fifty years ago. For half a century now, no one has touched those bones. "May he rest in peace!"” So Montresor didn’t let him be free and killed someone for insulting and bullying him which definitely is revenge but in my opinion Montresor punished him too heavily and Montresor never had the right to kill Fortunato. Due to all these facts the theme ‘Revenge’ is very important in the story.

I am going to discuss the theme revenge in the story.

In this story revenge is a very important theme. Montresor wanted to hurt Fortunato for every time that Fortunato hurt his feelings. The whole beginning of the story is about how Montresor want revenge like you can see in the sentences: “I promised myself that one day I would punish Fortunato for his insults to me” and “it was the thought of his death that made me smile”. We can see that Montresor really hated Fortunato because of what he had done. Montresor was also jealous of him because he was richer, married a beautiful women and everybody liked him. Montresor wanted Fortunato dead and when he saw him on the streets he had enough and decided to kill ham that evening. And because Fortunato thought they were good friends he didn’t expect Montresor to kill him. Because of all this we can see that revenge is a very important theme in the story.

I disagree with that because if the theme of the story is revenge the whole story should be about it. So what you are suggesting seems a bit contradictory. Something that I fully agree with is that Montresor was jealous of Fortunato and was sick of living in the shadow of Fortunato.

3, discuss the theme of revenge

In the beginning of the story, you can read that Fortunato is richer, bigger and more handsome than Montresor. Also, you can see that Fortunato makes fun of Montresor. I think that revenge is definitely a theme in this story, because in this early stage of the story, Montresor already laughs at the thought of killing Fortunato. Because Montresor never reacted to the insults, Fortunato thought that they were still good friends, but Montresor thought about it differently. Montresor met Fortunato on a carnival evening and takes advantage of him being drunk. Now was the time to kill his biggest enemy, and thus took him with him into the tombs. He quickly locked his arms in metal handcuffs and started to build a wall. In this way he took revenge on Fortunato making him feel like a fool and all the insults.
This shows the theme of revenge.

Question 3: Discuss the theme 'revenge' in the Cask of Amontillado.

I think revenge is an important theme in the Cask of Amontillado.

This can be seen when Montresor says that Fortunato had hurt his feelings a thousand times and that Fortunato likes to make a fool of him. Obviously Montresor did not like this and wanted to take revenge. He does this by making Fortunato believe that he has a barrel full of a really nice wine: Amontillado. Fortunato really likes this wine so he wants to taste it, to taste it he has to follow Montresor. They walked down into the dark tombs, underneath the pallace of Montresor, to go to the wine cellar. But they didn’t go to the wine cellar but to a tiny room. Fortunato was a bit drunk so it was easy for Montresor to lock him in metal handcuffs. Montresor built a wall in the doorway. He heard Fortunato scream but then he didn’t anymore. He put the last stone on the wall and Fortunato died.

This implies that the whole story is about taking revenge on someone. So revenge is an important theme in the Cask of Amontillado.

In this blog I’m going to discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the story The Cask of Amontillado.
In my opinion revenge plays a huge part in the story. This is shown when Montresor wants to take revenge on Fortunato by burying him under the ground of his palace. In the story Montresor says: “He did not know it was the thought of his death that made me smile.” And “Fortunato was bigger, richer and more handsome than I was. And he enjoyed making me look like a fool.” I think that this shows that the revenge he wants on Fortunato was triggered by jealousy. My conclusion to this is that because Fortunato was richer, bigger and more handsome Montresor felt threatened by him and didn’t like being friends with Fortunato at all. Montresor feels better when he builds a wall around Fortunato and he becomes ‘the biggest, richest and most handsome person’.

I’m going to discuss the theme revenge in The Cask of Amontillado. In my opinion, revenge is the most important theme in this story. This is shown when Montresor lures Fortunato to the basement. Montresor and Fortunato are friends, but Montresor actually hates Fortunato. He lures Fortunato down with a lie: He said he bought a cask of Amontillado, a wine Fortunato loves. Fortunato is a bit drunk, so it was easier for Montresor to convince him. When they are in the deepest room of his house, Montresor locks Fortunatos hands in handcuffs, attached to the wall. Then he starts to build a wall in front of Fortunato. He screams, but when Montresor is almost done, he is silent. Montresor finishes the wall and walks away. Fortunato dies and Montresor never came back. This implies that the theme ‘revenge’ is the most important theme in the story.

Question 3: Discuss the theme 'revenge' in the Cask of Amontillado.
I think ‘revenge’ is a theme of this story, because Montresor killed Fortunato, for all the things he did to him in his childhood.

This is shown when Montresor said Fortunato hurt his feelings a thousand times in his childhood. This is why Montresor wanted revenge. He was never angry at Fortunato, this made him think that Montresor was his friend. But he wasn’t, he hated him.
One time Fortunato and Montresor met on the street and walked to Montresor’s house. He said he had bought an Amontillado wine but didn’t know if it was real. Fortunato was a wine expert, so he had to taste the wine to see if it was real. The only downside to this was, they had to go to the dark, damp room, which has dead bodies and bones in it. When they walked further there was a tiny room with handcuffs attached to the wall. Before Fortunato could say anything, Montresor cuffed him to the wall. Montresor closes the tiny room with stone and cement. An waited till Fortunato was dead.

This shows that ‘revenge’ is indeed a theme of the story. Because Montresor wanted a revenge and therefore he killed Fortunato.

In the first part of the story you can directly tell that the main theme is revenge. But why? Montresor tells that Fortunato hurt his feelings a thousand times during the years of his childhood. He hated him so bad for doing this that he wanted him dead. He wanted revenge on all the times he hurt his feelings. Fortunato was bigger, richer and more handsome then Montresor and he enjoyed making fun of Montresor for it. When the time was right he would kill Fortunato. I agree with Montresor saying that he wants revenge but I don’t agree that the revenge has to be killing him.
We can all agree on the theme being revenge. He wants Fortunato dead so badly that he tricked him to come with him and he buried him alive.

    Question 3:
In my opinion, revenge is a good theme for the story, because Montresor wanted revenge of what Fortunato did in the past.

This is shown when Fortunato enjoyed making Montresor look like a fool, in the past. Fortunato hurt Montresor’s feelings for like a thousand times in his childhood. Still Montresor didn’t show his anger. But one day he would punish Fortunato for his insults to him. That day had come. Montresor lured Fortunato to a place underneath the palace by saying that there was a cask of Amontillado. They went into a very small room, where it was cold and dark. When they were in there, Montresor went out again and started to make a wall with stones and cement. First, he heard some noises from Fortunato, but when Montresor put the last stone into the wall, Fortunato died.

This suggests that Montresor wanted revenge on Fortunato by killing him. So, revenge is a very good theme for the Cask of Amontillado.

In my opinion, revenge plays a huge role in this story. First of all Montresor eventually killed Fortunato, because he didn’t like the person who has always been better than him.

For example, richer and more handsome are things you can be jealous about. So I think this can be seen as a big reason Montresor took revenge of being the more worth less man or kid when they were young. Another example is that Montresor said that Fortunato had hurt his feelings a thousand times. They don’t say that Montresor did do something about it, what means he waited because he couldn’t do anything or he waited for a good moment to let Fortunato pay for the things he had done to him. Killing wasn’t the best option in my opinion, but maybe for him he could not really think about other things.

This suggests that Montresor after all took his revenge, what he could not turn back after it was done and that this story is based on revenge.

In my opinion, the theme revenge is an important theme in the story. This can been seen in the text, where Montresor said: “Fortunato was bigger, richer and more handsome than I was. And he enjoys making me look like a fool.” Fortunato really hurt the feelings of Montresor, but he never showed his pain. Fortunato didn’t know that he was hurting Montresor.

Then one evening, during the carnival season, Montresor talked about a cask of Amontillado. Fortunato knew a lot about wine, so he wanted to taste if the wine was real. Now Montresor had a chance to kill his biggest enemy. He took Fortunato to the cellar and said the cask was there. But there was no cask. He only had chains for the arms of Amontillado and stones to build a door. There, in the cellar, Montresor buried Fortunato alive.

This shows that the theme revenge is really important and I think pretty clear.

When you read the story the Cask of Amontillado it is, in my opinion, clear that an important theme in the story is revenge. But why? In the story the reason is stated why Montresor, murdered Fortunato. The reason is that Fortunato always made him look like a fool and hurt his feelings. Also he was bigger, richer and more handsome. Later in life Fortunato became a rich and powerful man in their town, and he also married a rich beautiful woman. Montresor hated Fortunato and always wanted to kill him. He acted like they were friends while he thought different about that. This can be seen in the part of the story were Montresor says: ‘When I smiled at him, he thought it was because we were friends. He did not know it was the thought of his death that made me smile.’ He had always hated him. That’s why he took his change and revenged himself for all those years he lived in the shadow of Fortunato. Therefore I think revenge is an important theme in the story the Cask of Amontillado.

In my opinion revenge is a really important theme in this story. Montresor wants to take revenge on Fortunato. As we know, Fortunato is richer, bigger and more handsome than Montresor. Montresor doesn’t like this but he doesn’t want to tell that to Fortunato. I think the protagonist is jealous of Fortunato for everything he has and his whole life. He is jealous his whole life, but at 1 point he is going to take revenge.
This happiness after he took revenge can be seen in the sentence: ‘’I smiled to myself and stopped working so that I could better enjoy listening to the noise.” He liked the fact that the antagonist didn’t really enjoy his revenge on everything Fortunato did to him in the past.
In this story the writer shows the best type of revenge but he did not write it really clear. You have to read carefully to see his revenge and what he did.

I think he also took revenge because Fortunato kept making fun of him when they were little kids. I chose to discuss the theme revenge in the story Cask of Amontillado. But first, what is the story about. Well, this story is about a man called Montresor and his relationship with Fortunato. He and Fortunato had been friends since childhood. They were both born into important Italian families but Fortunato was bigger, richer and more handsome than him. Fortunato loved to make fun of him, he insulted him and hurt his feelings a lot. Montresor hated him because of that, but he never showed that. Fortunato fell for this and thought that they were good friends. Montresor wanted revenge for all the times he had been belittled by Fortunato. Montresor got his revenge during carnival season, he lured Fortunato to his place under the disguise that he was going to taste a Cask of Amontillado (wine) to test its validity. Fortunato fell for this because the wine is very rare at this time of the year. The wine was ‘hidden’ in his basement, so they went there. There Montresor trapped Fortunato in an open cell and built a wall to lock him up, his family never found his remains. Now, back to where I was, the theme revenge. The first clue is in the first sentence which says “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge”. The part where he says “I vowed revenge” shows us that he wanted revenge. The end of the story also shows that revenge is a theme. This is because Montresor had his revenge by locking up and indirectly killing Fortunato. That was the revenge that Montresor wanted. So to sum this up, revenge is a theme in this story because Montresor wanted and took his revenge.

Question number 1: How does Poe use setting to enhance the atmosphere of horror in the story?

The author, Edgar Allan Poe, describes the setting of the story quite detailed to give it an eerie and horrific feeling. For example, the story takes part at night; a lot of people are afraid of the darkness that envelops the night. Furthermore, Montresor takes Fortunato under the Montresor castle, between tombs, where it is damp and dark. You read about piles of bones against the walls on their way to the “Amontillado”. As if it was not already scary enough to walk between corpses. The little bits of information about the place and time the story takes place make it seem much creepier than if this were happening at full daytime in a candy shop. Poe’s intention is to build suspense and uneasiness in the reader before revealing the dramatic turn at the end of the story. He has done this by carefully planning every little detail in the story, especially the setting.

I will tell you if the theme ‘revenge’ is fitting for this story from Edgar Poe Allen: The cask of Amontillado.
I think this story is the meaning of revenge because of the following reasons: Fortunato was picking on the protagonist in this story when they were little kids, he said that Fortunato hurt his feelings and made him look like a fool but he never showed the rage that was howling inside. He promised himself that someday he will punish Fortunato for his deeds.

Revenge is about that someone or something did something to you what you did not like and you will do something back to that person or thing and in this story the punishment is death...
He waited for the perfect moment to finally do something back to the person he hated and in his case he chained him to a wall and build a giant wall from cement and bones and made it look like he was fooling around but this was sadly not the case.

In my opinion this story is great to read because the setting makes the story better and clearer. For me it is also a big factor that they talk about the room where his family is buried, which isn’t really important for the story but it really is for the setting. For example if they weren’t talking about dark rooms but about shiny and colourful rooms the story wouldn’t make any sense. This has also been shown with for example, Carnival which is sometimes a very bad time for some people instead of a good time and secondly the bones against the wall of course. This shows that the setting is really important for a story, if you read this story and replace all dark things for bright things it wouldn’t make sense. This technique has been used because it would complete the story and it lets us read this easily.

This story called “The cask of Amontillado” is about two “friends” who have known each other since they were children. I’m going to answer question 3; discuss the theme ‘revenge’ in the Cask of Amontillado.

As the way I see it this story is definitely about revenge. I think this because Montresor said at the beginning of the story that one day he would punish Fortunato for all the bad things he had done to him. And so he did, in the story he had put Montresor handcuffed in the tomb beneath his big house, he built a wall of stone bricks and cement around Fortunato and no one would ever find him. This is definitely revenge, he wanted Fortunato to die because of all the things he had done to him. So at the end of the story Montresor had found the right time and really wanted to kill Fortunato so he killed him in a very bad way.

In my opinion Montresor is a man. The story is obviously a horror story, and in most horror stories the narrator is a guy. This could explain why most people assume Montresor is a man. But when you look at the evidence, there is actually a way to explain why he would be a man.

In the story, Montresor refers to Fortunado as a ‘friend’. Around 1846, when the story was written, friendships between men and women weren’t common. Montresor’s plan is to ask Fortunado to go into the combs together to taste the wine. If Montresor was a women, this would be a highly inappropriate question. Especially in the time it was written. It could only be explained if they were both involved in some kind of sexual relationship, but the story says they were ‘friends’. The story would have gone completely different if he was a woman. Fortunado would probably never go into the combs with a woman unless he was in a relationship with her. I believe Montresor is a man because otherwise the story wouldn’t work out.

  46. 3. How not to get killed by your “Friends”

I’m going to be exploring the motivations behind the actions of Montresor, to be more specific, I’m going to focus on what caused his need for vengeance and what Fortunato could have done differently to avoid getting killed. Fortunato seemed unaware of why his best ‘friend’ turned against him, if you need evidence for this you can look at the last moments before his death, where he laughs thinking that he finally got the joke.
His first mistake was trusting his friend too much, it’s not smart to live in paranoia without trusting anybody but many people including Fortunato put too much trust in their friends, thinking that they’re not a threat. Friends are the worst enemies because they know so much about you, in all their interactions with you they have collected a library of behavioral patterns, biases, and weaknesses. Don’t assume that they will not turn on you and thinking that being more generous to them will strengthen their loyalty is foolish, it will most likely do the opposite.
His second mistake was appearing too perfect, hiding our flaws is something we all do, but if we succeed at not showing any of them we create a lot of silent enemies, ironic since we tend to do this to prevent people disliking us. If you take a deeper look into the story you will see that Montresor’s actions were motivated by envy not vengeance, envy is one of the most dangerous emotions because we don’t naturally confess to it, not even to ourselves, even Montresor claimed that his actions were motivated by vengeance. This makes envy hard to spot, that’s why you should prevent it by revealing harmless defects in your character every so often.
Mistake 3: Fortunato didn’t know who he dealt with. People like Montresor are like serpents, they won’t show a glint of anger when you hurt or deceive them but like a poison slowly seeping into their minds, there hate for you will only grow over time. They will wait for a moment of weakness, then, when they strike, they will do it with a characteristic calculated coldness.
Fortunato made more mistakes, I’m not going to go into those since, if he noticed and fixed any of the things I mentioned above he would have been better off.

Most people assume Montresor is a man, and I can understand why. In my opinion there is one main reason for this, it is in our nature. The evidence for this is that when we think of two best friends, we assume that they are from the same gender. We know that this can be different but it will be our first thought. This suggests it isn’t very strange we think that Montresor is a man.

In my opinion the story would definitely change if Montresor is a woman. I think this because after I read the story Montresor seemed like a man who got hurt so badly but didn’t want to show it. Probably because he thought he would lose his toughness and masculinity. But when I picture a woman in the story I think of someone that has also been hurt but that jealousy is the main reason for doing it. Women are naturally more jealous than men, and most of the time they are of someone close to them. This together suggests that the story would indeed change if Montresor is a woman.

In the beginning of the story we get to know that Fortunato and Montresor both were members of an old Italian family, so I would assume that this story took place in Italy.
Montresor tells us that the story took place late in the evening in the carnival season, this already sets off that they’re alone in the streets of Italy. In my opinion this is when the ambience of horror starts to enhance. Further in the story you could basically see how sarcastic Montresor was answering Fortunato. The writer uses this to let us know that Montresor was planning something. A little bit later they were downstairs in the tomb, this enhances the horror immensely. Montresor had restrained Fortunato and was building the wall but when he was almost finished he heard Fortunato laugh and say” Well, you have played a good joke on me. We will laugh about it soon over a glass of that Amontillado. But isn't it getting late. My wife and my friends will be waiting for us. Let us go.”
In my opinion the fact that they were in a tomb together at night with Montresor locking up Fortunato, seems to be the setting that enhances the atmosphere of horror at the most in this whole story.

  50. 1 Discuss how the Poe uses setting (where and when the story takes place) to enhance the atmosphere of horror in the story.

In the story is known as the Cask of Amontillado an atmosphere is created which creeps the reader out. This creates a very murderous vibe in the story that is light-hearted but at the same time very dark. Edgar achieves this by writing about settings which are a tad bit off.

The story starts out at a carnival party at night, which in this case makes the story immediately seem like a fun one. But after a few sentences Montresor already starts manipulating a very drunken Fortunato, and after he just told us he does not like him, we already know something is up. Another example is the catacombs. Catacombs are genuinely creepy, we can all understand that, but by making it so that the two travel there for the purpose of achieving some wine shouldn't make any sense whatsoever. Once Fortunato is finally awake and starts crying for the 'joke' to end while he is being locked up, Montresor agrees with him but still continues constructing the wall, slowly dampening the cries of Fortunato. The key to making something horror is by creating something human and twist it in a dark way.

This is also exactly what happend. Montresor fooled Fortunato to go to the wine cellar underneath his house and locked Fortunato there behind a wall of stone and since than nobody has broke the wall down. As you can see Montresor really wanted Fortunato to suffer for the things that he did to him in the past.
