In my opinion, John D. Rockefeller’s story is a very good example of the American dream, which is the idea that hard work and effort will result in success, wealth and happiness. John Rockefeller was born in a quite poor family and slowly worked his way up to the top. In his case, to a wealth summing up to 10% of America’s total GDP, and as a consequence of his immense wealth he was named one of the richest people in the entire world ever. His journey to this amount of wealth started of slowly at a small bookkeeping job at a small produce company and ended up as being the CEO of one of the world’s most successful companies. This is the epiphany of the American dream in my opinion.

What can people possibly mean when they are talking about an ‘American dream’? I think that what they have in mind is having a bad childhood but still ending well. Take Oprah Winfrey as an example. Oprah Winfrey was born with divorced parents which caused her grandmother taking care of her. Oprah was a real trouble kid, that can be shown by the things she did like running away from home and stealing. She had a lot of problems she had to deal with. She got abused by family members at an age of nine. At her fourteenth she got pregnant, but not long after giving birth her son died. Besides all her problems she did very well at school and at the broadcast and media training. When she was nineteen years old she got to co-host a local newscast, from there on her success started. As you can see Oprah her life didn’t start perfect but because she did her best at school and worked hard she still ended up pretty well. She never gave up.

I think that a typical American dream, is about somebody who was as a child (very) poor, but as this person grew older he or she is becoming more and more popular and / or rich. I think that Arnold Schwarzenegger is a very good example for this. At first he had a rough childhood. He and his family lived in a small village in Austria. At an age around 20 he moved to America with the goal to be a competitive bodybuilder. He won many prices and he was popular as a bodybuilder. After this he became actor and he was the protagonist in many very famous movies, for example the Terminator trilogy. In 2003 he became one of the governors of California. Because of all of this he is very famous and rich. I think this is a dream that every American has to have.

    2. I agree with the unknown person that reacted before me. I think that “The American Dream” isn’t always about a person becoming really rich or famous but just about setting goals and working really hard to get there. I also think that the person who is living “The American Dream” didn’t need to be a very poor child.

‘The American dream’, people talk lot about it, but what is it? In my opinion it is the idea that it doesn’t matter where you came from, or how much money you have. As long as you work hard to achieve your goal everything is possible. So if you want to live a rich and famous life, go for it. An example of someone who did this is Oprah Winfrey. She had a lot of trouble as a kid. She had divorced teenage parents which is why she had to be raised by her grandmother. In her rebellious teenage years she was stealing and running away from home. Maybe even worse, she became pregnant at her fourteenth and gave birth to a boy. Like this wasn’t bad enough her son died shortly after she gave birth. But even though she had all this difficulties in life she never, ever gave up. On high school she followed broadcast and media training. At the age of nineteen she co-hosted a local newscast. This was followed by many TV jobs, which eventually led to her hosting a daytime talk show in Chicago. This popular show was the start of her giant succes.

Right now Oprah Winfrey isn’t only a host but also an author, magazine publisher, theater producer and much more. Her estimated capital is around the amazing amount of 3 billion. So you see, if you let nothing stop you, you can eventually reach your goal.

In my opinion the American dream is about people who grew up with nothing or who had problems elsewhere, who went to the USA to get a new chance at a good life, and in some cases even more than that.

I think John D. Rockefeller was living the American dream because he grew up with nothing and turned out to be one of the richest men in US history. This can be seen as he grew up in a family with 6 children raised single handedly by a mother while his father was on the road. At the age of 16 he was hired as a bookkeeper at a produce company, after already having done several jobs to raise money for his family. After 4 years as a bookkeeper he joined the oil business with a business partner. From there he made his way up to owning (maybe) the biggest company in US history. Worth 10% of the GDP of the USA.

    1. I understand what you mean, but in my opinion the American Dream is a little different. I believe that it isn't about people who grew up with nothing, and got a chance at a good life when they went to the USA. I would say that it is about everyone being equal in the USA, that everyone has an equal chance. And that it isn't just about people who went to the USA, but also about people that already lived there.

The American dream, what does that actually mean? The American dream can have two definitions, one of them is freedom and equality for every American. The second one is more personal, a life of happiness and success. Everyone’s opinion about happiness and success is different, but in my opinion it means that wherever you came from, poor or rich, if you work hard you can always achieve your goal. That’s why I think the story of Chris Gardner is a great example of ‘The American dream’. Chris Gardner didn’t really have ‘the best life’ when he was younger, but because he worked so hard and believed in himself despite several setbacks he ended up as a successful man.

That Chris Gardner had a hard life when he was younger is shown in some sentences of the story, like: “Gardner was raised by a single mother but forced from his home as a young man as a result of her bad relationship with an abusive boyfriend.” In the story it is also made clear that Chris Gardner his wife left him, which made him and his son homeless. Besides all this he worked very hard and because of his growing success he has his own firm (Gardner Rich & Co., in Chicago) which was sold in a multimillion-dollar deal.

This shows that if you work hard and believe in yourself everything is possible and you can always live your dream life.

The American dream is the ideal of a person about freedom, equality and opportunity. Personal happiness also is a great example of this. In my opinion the story of Chris Gardner is a good example of living the American dream. This is shown when going through the bad childhood he had and his wife leaving him after he comes back from jail leaving him with his son. Although all the bad luck and maybe ‘stupid’ choices he made in his life he worked day and night so he could still afford the living necessities and look after his son. All the hard working eventually paid off and his success led to having his own firm. From this we can inter that you should never give up when you’re having a hard time and if you really want to achieve something there’s always a way to reach your goals.

The American dream is in my opinion that it doesn’t matter where you were born, who your parents are or what your skin colour is because we are all equal and that you can achieve all your goals if you work hard.

In my opinion I think that Oprah Winfrey is the perfect example for that. She is living the American Dream because she came from having almost nothing to having everything that she could ever wish for. This is because she was a rebellious teen and also a lot of horrible things had happened to her. For example: in the text is shown that she lived in poverty, lost a son and was being molested by a family member under the age of 15. But all those traumatic experiences didn’t stop her from becoming one of the most famous and richest people in the world. She worked hard to accomplish her goals even though so much was holding her back from the past. That is why I think she is living the American Dream.

I love your definition of ‘The American Dream’ and fully agree with it. There is one thing that I would argue and that’s where you say: “..., she came from having almost nothing to having everything that she could ever wish for.”

In my opinion that isn’t true because no one will ever have everything they long for. An example of this is that everyone keeps on wanting more and more. This can be seen with a lot of celebrities, they first want one car but when they have that car they want a different one.

Another example of why it isn’t true is that we don't know what she desires to have. Maybe she wants something that can be bought like feeling a special kind of love from someone and hasn’t experienced it. So this shows that we can’t know if she has everything she could wish for.

To wrap up I just want to say that you did a great job on your blogpost!

The American dream, we all know it, but what does it actually mean? In my opinion it means that if you work hard and never give up, you can come at the top, even when it seems impossible.

I think the most inspiring story is the story of Oprah Winfrey. She was raised by her grandmother because her parents leaved her after their divorce. In Oprah her rebellious teenage years she ran away and also stole. She got pregnant on her 14th. She gave birth to a baby boy, but unfortunately he died shortly after being born. Despite the fact that she didn’t have the youth everyone deserves, she is really succesful now. She came at this top because of high school, where she followed broadcast and media training. When Winfrey was 19 she was co-anchoring a local newscast. This lead to other TV jobs, for instance her daily talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The story of Oprah Winfrey is the perfect example of the American Dream because she never gave up, even in all her hard times.

  10. Living the dream life: John D. Rockefeller

The American dream is a concoction of many American values like hard work and freedom. It is the legend of people that, even though they didn’t have a lot of inherited wealth, they still succeeded through hard work, intelligence and talent.
Rockefeller is one of the, if not the, richest American that has ever walked the earth. With an estimated net worth of over 336 billion USD (adjusted for inflation), he, in his prime, was worth more than the top tree richest people alive combined. What makes that even more impressive is that he had fairly average parents for the time and that all of his money was self-made. He embodied the American dream.

But is it even possible for the average joe to generate as much wealth as somebody like John D. Rockefeller, and if so is it even worth it?
It is very unlikely that you could earn the wealth of people that “embody” the American dream and even if you earned that money, you will probably have sacrificed your health, social life, and free time to get there. I don’t think that the average person could make those sacrifices, and that is fine. You are free to choose how much time you are going to invest in the different areas of your life and not everybody is going to enjoy working 80 hours (or more) a week. The amount of stress that comes with those high paying jobs will eventually take its toll on you. If you reach the upper middle class there doesn’t seem to be a incentive to earn more, it seems to me that you are better of improving the other areas of your life instead of trying to live the “dream”.

  11. In my opinion the American dream is about being free, as in for example: no matter your gender or your race you’re able to achieve anything and become anything you want. But it’s also about freedom of speech and actions, it’s about expressing yourself.

I choose Ursula Burns as an example of the American dream, because she was raised by a single mother, who was also a Panamanian immigrant. Arguably I think that their lives were very hard at first, but later in life they were able to achieve “The American Dream”. Because Ursula has been discriminated due to her gender, her teachers thought that Ursula should choose a traditional career for women. But Ursula overcame that and choose a career that she liked and not a career because of her gender. I think this is the perfect example of my idea of the American dream, I know this because she has her own opinion, is able to achieve anything and she fought stereo typical discrimination.

Nobody was able to stop her, and she proved her own perseverance. Also, your example made very clear that becoming rich doesn’t necessarily have to mean it’s an ‘’American dream’’’, it shows that doing your best and making your dreams come true could be an ‘’American dream’’. You’ve showed this by telling us that she fought for stereo typical discrimination and she is able to achieve anything but still lives the ‘’American dream’’.

Living the American Dream, Ursula Burns.

Ursula Burns is in my opinion a very good example of the American dream. The American dream is the idea that you should work hard for success. If you don’t succeed, it is, despite your situation, your own fault. I think it is a pretty unrealistic idea, but from the group that does succeed, Ursula Burns is one of the best examples.

To explain my opinion, I am going to use a quote from the text: “While she was pointed by teachers toward a traditional woman's career such as nursing, she made another calculation” (10 People Living the American Dream, Joe Mont) I think this decision really shows how strong she is, by not listening to her teachers who say that she should be what society thinks a poor woman should be. Despite her teachers, she started to study math and science. Burns started to work at Xerox, and she worked herself up to the top. Now, she earns millions and has influence on the world.

I think Ursula Burns’ achievements are really impressive. She went from poor immigrant to rich business women. I love how she didn’t take the advice from her teachers and chose to be strong.

  13. “Living the American Dream.” It’s something we’ve probably all heard of at least once in our lives. But do you know what it is? Because I don’t, but I can guess. I think it is when you are born in one of the lower classes of society and are able to work yourself up to one of the higher classes, to be able to live life happily in a relationship, having no worries and to be able to do (almost) whatever you want. I think Mr. John D. Rockefeller is a good example of someone like this, as one of six children, being raised almost single-handedly by his mother while his father, a traveling salesman, was on the road. He started down the ladder just like most people, only having small jobs and having a low income, he later turned out to have some serious analytical skills and adeptness at number-crunching enabling him to quickly climb the ladder and become one of the wealthiest men ever with his personal net worth accounting for nearly 10% of the nation’s GDP.

    The American Dream?(Jay-Z)

In my opinion, this is definitely a good example of the American dream, because he really worked hard for his dreamed and he achieved it. Now he is really rich, because of his perseverance in the, for his family, poor times.

An example of this is that he had dared to tried to rap for a professional label and it worked! A really smart thing of him was that he didn’t directly went to the big labels, but first in his own neighborhood and after, he just climbed the ladder.

This shows that if you work hard enough you will make it and maybe get a lot of money like Jay-Z, of course you also should have some kind of luck. A lot of people didn’t know him in the past, but because of his labels and music, a lot of people do know him now, which is very handy for his clothing lines and other brands that belong to him. This is also a very good thing to do if you already have a lot of money. This are just the details that make the American dream for me.

    The American dream,

I think that the American dream means that everyone could be successful and rich even if you had a bad childhood or if you are having a bad life now. But if you want to be successful you should put effort in it.

In my opinion Oprah Winfrey is a good example of the American dream. If you see her right now you wouldn’t expect that she had quite a difficult childhood, but she had.
For example, Oprah was a rebellious teen, because she stole things and she even ran away. At the age of nine, she had been molested repeatedly by family members. When she was 14 years old, she gave birth to a baby boy. But her son died shortly after birth. When she was in high school, broadcast and media training was the beginning of her success. From that moment on, her life was getting better and better. She became very popular as an author, actor, magazine publisher, theatre producer and a philanthropist.

This suggests that Oprah Winfrey is one of the best examples of the American dream. She had a bad childhood, but now she is a very successful person. Even Bruno Mars mentions her in his song Billionaire.

In my opinion the American Dream is the hope that every American can become rich and/or famous if they work hard and try their very best, no matter what happened in the past. Oprah Winfrey had a really hard childhood. Her teenage parents separated after her birth. Oprah was raised by her grandmother. She had been molested by family members as early as the age of 9. The story of Arnold Schwarzenegger is a very good example of the American dream I will elaborate on that later but first I will define the American dream, so that we’re on the same page. The American dream is about having to work hard to achieve great things. Let me give you an example. If you want to be a teacher, you have to pick a subject (except for when you teach the primary school). When you pick that subject you learn about that subject. Meanwhile, you also learn how to teach. During this progress you are already working hard. If you finally get your degree, you have worked hard enough to be a competent teacher. If you disagree with my interpretation you are welcome to react to this post and give criticism. Now that I have finished that I will elaborate on my point.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had a rough childhood in Austria. He claimed that he got physically abused by his father. Arnold didn’t give up on life and commit suicide but he was strong and kept on going. A couple of years later he trained to be a competitive bodybuilder and after hard work it worked out very well. When he went to the USA, he had a chance to play in the “The Terminator” film. After his role in The Terminator, Arnold became famous and got offered more roles in movies. This made him very rich and was the start of a successful career, but that’s not all, Schwarzenegger also became the governor of California.
The story of Arnold is a story about a man with a rough childhood and a rough start in life but after hard work he became the man that made bodybuilding popular, and he managed to become rich and famous with a successful career in an area he was a complete stranger to.

    Assignment 3; the American dream.

The American dream what does it actually mean? As I see it everyone has his or her own American dream, it varies a lot per person. Some people really want to become a doctor and others just want to have a good and simple life, you can also say that the American dream is just that every American has equality and freedom. But in my opinion an American dream is living a poor live with a lot of poverty and then ending up something you always wanted to be or just having a good and rich life.
It seems to me that Oprah Winfrey has the American dream, she did not have a good childhood, her teenage parents separated after birth and she was raised by her grandma. Also she got pregnant at an age of 14 and 2 weeks after the labour her kid died. If you hear this you probably won’t think about it like an American dream, but she did good at school and ended up being a television presenter and having around 3 billion dollars.
So as I see it this is the story about Oprah Winfrey is an excellent example of an American dream, it is something Oprah Winfrey worked hard for, she did not give up and that is something really important.

What is the American dream? In my opinion the American dream is that It doesn’t matter we’re you’re from, what kind of family you live in, what schools you went to or how much money your parents have, what matters is if you work hard you can achieve anything.

That’s why I chose Arnold Schwarzenegger as my example.

Arnolds father was an abusive and alcoholic Nazi cop. He used to beat Arnold with a belt. Arnold watched movies as an escape from the sadness inside him. Because of that his love for America became to grow. He thought he could get a future there but his father thought his dreams were ridicules. He thought he should be an police officer. But he didn’t want that so body building became his only way out. He went to America with nothing but a dream with him. When you realize how much he has been through it makes it even more incredible that ‘he made it’ in America. He went from absolutely nothing to being a hero in America (not literally). I think everyone should be as determined as Arnold Schwarzenegger. All of this makes him a very good example of the American dream

    The American Dream

In my opinion, the story of Chris Gardner is a really good example of the American Dream.
The American Dream means that everyone can become successful. No matter how bad your youth was or how bad you were as a child, if you work really hard for what you want and don't give up, you can be successful.

I have chosen the story of Chris Gardner. He didn’t have an easy youth. He was raised by a single mother and later on placed in a foster home because his mother tried to kill her boyfriend. Later he got married and he also got a child. Everything was going well until he was arrested and had to spend some time in jail for having amassed $1,200 in parking tickets. When he returned home, he discovered that his wife had left him. I think that this must have been really difficult for him. A lot of people would have given up, but he kept going. He had to work all day and night to get a hot meal and safe place to sleep for himself and his son. But hard work eventually paid off! He was finally able to provide for himself and his son. He even built up his own firm, Gardner Rich & Co. The firm became really successful and was sold for millions of dollars.

    The American Dream

The American dream is a dream of progress. A dream that everyone is free and equal and is able to achieve anything they want if they put effort in it. Of course this is these days not as easy as it sounds. With discrimination and certain privileges not everyone is equal, and for some it may be easier to achieve their dreams than for others. That is why I choose Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey is a women of colour that came from a broken family. Dark-skinned people, and especially women, are not treated equal to white people. And by living in poverty and getting pregnant by 14, she was doomed to fail in life. But still she managed to become someone that people look up to and to have a voice that people actually listen to. And with her power and money, she improved lives of many others. In my opinion this is the perfect example of the American dream. She did not have any privileges, but by working hard, she made her way to the top. She became a role model to many women all over the world.

The American dream of Oprah Winfrey

In my opinion the American dream is a ‘dream’ of someone, who didn’t have a nice start of his/her life, but who has worked hard and now has a happy and successful life.

An example of somebody who’s living the American dream is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey was born as a child of teenage parents. Her parents separated after her birth and she was raised by her grandmother. She was a rebellious teen, who was stealing and who ran away a couple of times. She had to deal with poverty and she says she has been abused by family members since she was 9 years old. She also became pregnant at the age of 14 and gave birth to a son, who died shortly after he was born. In high school she followed a broadcast and media training and she liked that a lot. When she was 19 years old she got a job at a local news show on TV. After that other jobs on TV followed. She became very popular and very rich.

This shows that Oprah Winfrey is a very good example of someone who is living the American dream. When she was young she was facing many difficulties, such as poverty, abuse, separated parents who left her and the loss of her son. Nevertheless she became a very successful business woman, who is happily living with her partner Stedman Graham for already 32 years. She became so successful by believing in herself, lots of hard work and perseverance. She is a role model for many others, who want to live their American dream.

The American dream means in my opinion that it doesn’t matter where you come from, how your childhood was or whether you made some big mistakes. It is about trying to become a successful person and accomplishing your dreams. I think a good example of the American dream is Chris Gardner. This is because he did not enjoy a nice childhood. He was forced to leave his home when he was still a child. At one moment he met a man called Bob Bridges. Bob Bridges offered Chris Gardner a job, but not much later Bob Bridges got fired from his own job and Chris Gardner became unemployed. Not much later Chris had to spend some time in jail. When he got out of jail he noticed that his wife had left him, but Chris would not give up. He had to take care of his son and himself. For a while he was considered as homeless. Due to his hard work despite the difficult times he found a way to start his own company, “Gardner rich & Co”. The growing company ensured that he could provide food and a shelter for his son and himself and not only that it brought him success. This shows that even if things are hard in your life, you could still end up living a happy life if you are willing to change your life into a better one and work hard for that. This is why I think he lives the American dream.

  26. In my opinion, the American dream is not a certain moment in time. It is a phase that you go through. Normally, your life doesn't start very good but it improves over time.
And after a period of time, you live the American dream, your dream. This is the reason why I chose Jay-Z.

Well, Jay-Z grew up in a very poor family in Brooklyn. He was raised in a Brooklyn housing project. He always had one hobby, and it was rapping. He did this in the local neighbourhood and
earned a little money. He was still chasing the dream he had. Afterwards, he had the dream to sign for a professional recording label. After being rejected by some labels, he did not lose faith. He kept on going striving for his dream. He made a new and independent label called Roc-A-Fella Records with 2 partners. His life became better and better with new labels and other partnerships with other brands.

This shows you that if you have a dream or a main goal in life, you should always keep believing and hopefully, even most likely your dream will become reality. Right now he is a worldfamous rapper but also
more of a social influencer. This helps him to become even more well-known. The brands that he is promoting become more popular as well.

Once you have a dream, you have to keep working hard. You have to deal with disappointments. You have to focus on your goals. When you do this, one day, it will become reality. Your dreams will come through. For me, this is the American dream!

The American dream. When I hear those words, I immediately think of someone who was born in a poor family with a little or no opportunities to become rich and powerful bit still managed to fulfill their dreams and become wealthy. In my opinion, Oprah Winfrey is a great example for that. She was a child of teenage parents, they separated shortly after her birth. She was raised by her grandmother, who always believed in the fact that Oprah was mend to be on stage. Her first job was at a local grocery store, but her career started when she won an oratory contest which made her go to a university. After that, she started working at a radio station to do the news, which made her the first black female news anchor. These things made her grew her success. She got for example her own talk show and a cable network! Oprah, now a multi billionaire, once started with nothing. This shows how you can go from almost nothing to a fortune if you work hard and have a bit of luck.

The “American Dream” has several aspects when you read different stories and hear diverse opinions. For instance, one might believe that this certain “Dream” is all about getting rich, while on the other hand, someone else may think that it is an abundance of happiness that people are talking about when mentioning it. It is safe to conclude that they all mean “success” but express it as their own sentiment.

Selling newspapers as a child was not enough to prevent John Paul Dejoria from being sent to a foster home due to the poverty of his single mother. Not having enough tuition money, he needed to settle for working with hair care products at Redken Laboratories. As he gained experience, he partnered up with Paul Mitchell. Together they created the John Paul Mitchell Systems as a competitor for Redken. He became CEO of the company which today makes roughly $900 million in a year. He also ventured into other areas, like tequila and a nightclub chain.

Dejoria’s story shows us that if you work hard for something and never give up, it will result in success. Going from poverty to becoming a millionaire is a great leap, but it is attainable.

I chose Arnold Schwarzenegger because he plays in one of my favourite films: ‘Escape plan’ as Emil Rottmayer. I think living the American dream means that you can make nothing into anything, what I mean by that is that if someone is for example born in a very poor family and has to fight to survive, later in his life becomes very successful and rich. Also living towards a goal and at the end reaching it.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a good example of the American dream because he had a very rough childhood. He got physically abused by his father, who had voluntarily joined the Nazi’s in World War II. But he had a goal, he wanted to go to America. He became what he wanted, a bodybuilder. He also had a huge film career and he has also been the governor of California from 2003 until 2011. Arnold Schwarzenegger definitely achieved his goal and lived his own American dream!

If that would happen to me, I think I wouldn’t dare to dream of a bright future. But he did! He set America as a goal, as a bodybuilder. Later he was in an influential documentary about sport, Pumping iron. After that he became an actor I many popular movies, like Conan the Barbarian, Terminator, True lies, etc.. While he was this successful, he was also got chosen in 2003 to be Governor of California. Estimates of his net worth are all over the place, from $100 million to $300 million to $3 billion. What is the American dream?: The ideal idea about life with the highest goals which every American (or even every person) can achieve.

In my opinion Oprah Winfrey is a good example of someone who is living the American dream.
The evidence for this is that first her life looked like a mess; right after she was born her parents divorced and Oprah was a problem child because she ran away & steeled. She also had other problems: Oprah claimed that she was abused by family members at the age of 9. And at the age of 14 she got pregnant and gave birth to boy (who died shortly afterwards). Above all of these problems she did good at school as consequence of this she was successful and was co-anchoring a local newscast at the age of 19. She developed well in the ‘TV industry’ so she got more and more popular and nowadays she is an actor, author, magazine publisher, theater producer and philanthropist and has nearly 3 billion dollar of personal wealth.

This shows that Oprah Winfrey is a good example of someone who’s living the American dream.

The American dream of Oprah Winfrey

According to me, the American dream means starting up having a normal life or in some cases a hard life, with for example not a lot of money or love in your childhood. But ending up having a lot of success and personal happiness. I also think that everyone can achieve the American dream if you work hard enough and try the best you can.

Oprah Winfrey was a rebellious teen who was raised by her grandmother, abused by family members at the age of nine and pregnant at the age of fourteen. She’s a great example of someone achieving the American Dream. Because besides all the problems and hard times she had to face, Oprah managed to get success. Her success came alive after she got to co-anchor a local newscast, because after that many other TV-jobs followed which led her to hosting a daytime talk show in Chicago. Now she’s not only a daytime talk presenter, but also an actor, author, magazine publisher, theater producer and philanthropist.

In short, Oprah Winfrey has worked herself to the top by never giving up and always working hard. She’s the perfect example of someone living the American Dream.

In my opinion ‘the American dream’ means that you had a very bad childhood (divorced parents, poor or child abuse) and you have a big dream. You will do anything you can to achieve that dream by working very hard.

Arnold Schwarzenegger lives the American dream because he started from nothing and became one of the most famous actors in the world and that is what the American dream is about: to have an opportunity to become successful, and to become successful by hard work. This can be seen in the past of Arnold Schwarzenegger, some people say he was beaten by his dad when he was a child, so he went to America to look for a new and clean future.

An example of this is: Arnold started to lift weights at 15 years old because he was probably skinny and by working hard he became one of the biggest and strongest man in the world. This suggests that everyone is able to be one of the most successful people in the world if you work hard.

What can you call the American dream? I think the American dream means that even if someone grew up in a poor family, through education and hard work they can achieve their dream.
This is exactly why I think Oprah Winfrey is living the American dream.

For example, she grew up living with her grandmother, because her parents separated at birth. As a teen she was prone to stealing and always ran away. She got pregnant at 14 and lost her son soon after birth. But in her childhood she did value great education. In High School she studied Broadway and media training, this is what made her achieve her goal. She did so good, that at her 19th she was co-anchoring her first local newscast. This all led to her phenomenal success.

The definition of the American dream is the American ideal for people that everybody has equality and can say their own opinion. In other words; if you came from a rich family, a famous one or you come from the streets and you have nothing. Everybody gets a change to become millionaire, billionaire or something you would like to be. For example, a famous story is that a poor newsboy became the director of a big newspaper who earned a lot of money. This is what they call an American dream.

I have chosen the story from John Paul Dejoria.
I think this is a good example of the American dream, because he began at the bottom. He worked at a young age to earn money for him family and I don´t think it was the best job to do but he had no choice. His mother was single, which means he missed a part of his life. A father that made you and a lot of people love their own so much. After this period was gone he became a ´´street boy´´. He had joined a gang what I think isn´t a positive thing. It is kind of controlling you. On the other side he did go to school and after a while he made his life good again. His life became the best when he organized a Redken competition.it worked out well and moved to a hair care product company. The business earns almost 900 million dollars a year what is like more than 900.000 times more money he earnt when he was selling newspapers.
Briefly summarized, he started as a poor boy who had only his mother and became a good business man on his own success to work hard and fight.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a perfect example of the American dream, even someone not born in America can achieve the dream in America. Arnold was born in Australia, had a rough childhood. He found something he was very good at … “Bodybuilding”, he gave it all he had and menaced to achieve the top. He used this fame to start a movie career and made some of the most recognized movies ever like “Terminator”.
He was happily married to the niece of President John F. Kennedy (which he later in life divorced after fathering a child with another women). Being married to Maria Shriver meant he was well known in political circles, this resulted in Arnold Schwarzenegger running and being elected Governor of California twice.

After that he was asked for several roles in films and documentaries.

After that he was asked to play the head roll in “Conan the Barbarian.”
But his biggest success came after the release of the popular film “The Terminator.”

The American dream means that every individual can become successful. It is all due to your own efforts, if you start rich or poor it doesn’t matter, everyone has the same rights to achieve what they want. An example of this is Ursula Burns. She was raised by a single mother who was a Panamanian immigrant. At school she discovered her talent for math and figures. Even though the teachers tried to turn her to a career which was more suitable for woman at that time, she chose her own path and created her way to the top. She went to the university and after that started working at Xerox. That led to jobs with more influence and a higher salary, like vice president for global manufacturing and senior vice president of corporate strategic services. She was called out president of Xerox and even became a chairwoman of Xerox in 2010. She started out low as daughter of immigrants, but she climbed up. She ignored the advices of the teachers and choose what she thought was best. Therefore I think Ursula Burns lived the American Dream.

In my opinion the American dream stands for working hard to eventually achieve your biggest dreams possible. An example of this is the story of Chris Gardner, he started off with a lot of issues in his youth that he never wanted to experience again.
So, he joined the U.S. navy to become something better than his past. After 4 years of working in the navy, Chris got an offer from Dr Robert Ellis to assist him in research which he accepted. Chris Gardner got married and had a child with Sherry Dyson. After a little while tension grew between Chris and his wife, because she tried to run away with their son. Unfortunately, the police got involved with this and they found out that Chris hadn’t paid his parking tickets which lead to him being imprisoned for ten days because he couldn’t pay the parking tickets. After spending his time in prison, he came home to find his apartment empty and his wife had left him. Gardner participated in a training at Dean Witter Reynolds and passed his licencing exam, that eventually got him a position at Bear Stearns.
He worked very hard to provide for his son and himself, eventually the hard work paid off and he founded a company that later was sold in a multimillion-dollar deal.
So basically, he built a stairway of his past problems to reach his biggest dream.

In my opinion a perfect example of the American Dream is Oprah Winfrey because she didn’t exactly had the perfect youth but still became one of the most successful women of America.

An example of that she didn't have the best childhood is that she has been molested by family members at a young age. This and other rough times probably led to her being a rebellious teenager.

Now she is very famous and successful which can be seen in the fact that she is an actor, author, magazine publisher, theater producer, etc. and has a personal wealth of about 3 billion dollars. Obviously this doesn't mean that she is happy and has a perfect life but I think we can safely say that her life improved.

I think he is a good example because he really had nothing and really got so far in his life because of that he never gave up and really did his best to get a good future. Some information about him and how his life was: Michael Oher had 11 brothers and sisters but his father and mother were both not really supportive parents his mother was an alcoholic and crack cocaine addict. His father was most of the time in jail. He became a foster child. He had several foster homes and also had some homeless periods. He didn’t got support from his parents he only got some little attention during school. He all had to do it by himself. In 2004 he got a stable home with nice parents and they gave him support and also gave him a tutor. After that things became better and better, he even won the super bowl.

  47. The American Dream

I personally thinks they concept of “The American Dream” is a little bit vague. Because a dream can mean a lot of different things for different people. Some people may want success is their career, but other people might want a lot of friends and have fun in their lives.
So I think that the definition of “The American Dream” is about being equal and having success no matter where you come from. It’s the fact that even if you grew up having nothing you can still have a successful life.
Take a look at John D. Rockefeller for example, he didn’t have anything growing up. But he still turned out to be one of the most richest people in the history of the USA. His dad was almost never around, so his mom needed to take care of him and his brothers and sisters. He didn’t have the worst parents, but it’s the fact that all the money he ever had was coming form hard work. He owned all of his money by himself. He had about Which you can interpret as the American dream.
I don’t know if everybody wants the American dream. Because in order to achieve the American dream you need to be willing to work more than 70 hours a week. That is probably not something everybody would like to do. But even if you did work so much it wouldn’t be guaranteed that you will have such an successful life the one John D. Rockefeller had. After it is called the American dream for a reason.
