Question 2:
The significance of the final sentence is about the meaning of the metaphor in the story. The last line says ‘And the summer was over’. The meaning of this is, is that Myop learns that there are bad things in life, like murder.
‘The summer’, in this metaphor, refers to the innocence of a child, Myops innocence. She only knew about the good and happy things in life, and didn’t know about the bad. The man who has been hung by a noose, stands for the bad things in life, like in his case, murder. Myop now knows that life is not all about her flowers. This can be seen by the fact she lays her down flowers in the end of the story, after she wanted to pick the pink rose that is surrounded by the rotten noose.
So, my point is that the wole story is a metaphor for growing up, and that the final sentence stands for the moment you start to understand that the world can be a cruel place.
I totally agree with you that 'the summer' is a methaphor for her innocence. She learned that life isn't only about the good things, but also about the bad. With that her innocence disappears.

What is the significance of the final sentence?
The writer uses the last sentence as a symbol to express that not only the summer is over, but also Myop’s innocence and childhood. This can be seen by looking at the story; the story begins very bright and happy, she is living a innocence childhood. The sun is shining, she is singing a lovely song and picking flowers. Further in the story, the writer describes her making her own path, so she is doing things all by herself. “She had often been as far before, but the strangeness of the land made it not as pleasant as her usual haunts.” This sentence shows that she sees things differently now, she has become older and wiser than the last time she went this far. At this point, the story also turns a bit darker: “The air was damp, the silence close and deep.” Myop finds the body and suddenly she is confronted with this cruel world. She finds out that real life isn’t all brightness and peace. In one moment, her innocence and childhood are taken away. This shows that the meaning of final sentence isn’t only that the summer was over, but also the ‘summer’ part of Myop’s life.
Noa Hensema, CTV3a
VerwijderenI do not totally agree with you last sentence. I believe that "the summer" being over just stands for her childhood being over. In the story, I did not read anything about the weather changing, so I think the actual season was not ending. It is just a methaphor for her childhood.
Minke van Manen, ctv3a
VerwijderenI can understand that u don't really get my point of view, but i think that the writer wouldn't use this symbol if it wasn't completely true.
Noa Hensema, CTV3a
VerwijderenIf you put it that way, I kind of agree with you point of view as well. In the story, she does not write about the season summer ending, but she might had that on her mind when she wrote it. Because otherwise she probably would not have come up with the metaphor "the summer ending".

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe Flowers by Alice Walker
In this blog I’m going to answer the question: what the significance of the final sentence is “and the summer was over.”
The writer uses the seasons of the year to show the turn in Myop’s life by showing how fast things in life can change. Just like with the seasons which go from summer one day to autumn the other day. The way you look at life can also change by the smallest adjustments. This is shown when you read the first sentence where the story starts with a beautiful summer day on which Myop feels light and good in the warm sun and she happily sings a song wandering around the woods. This changes when Myop finds a dead body of a man. At this point she realises that the woods in which she had been lots of times before now didn’t feel safe anymore. From this we can infer that the sweet innocent girl from that morning now became aware of the scary things that can happen in life. The summer of her life was now over.
Noa Hensema, CTV3a
VerwijderenI really like the idea of the "seasons of the year". When I read the story, I thought I found all of the layers but I did not think of this one. But I believe that "The summer was over" does not just mean that she became aware of scary things. Even though she was very young, the body forced her to grow up instantly. “The summer was over” stands for her childhood ending. I thought the rest of your answer was great, but I kind of missed that part, so I thought I would mention it.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 1: How does the author, Alice Walker, use the symbol of flowers to show Myop’s coming-of-age experience?
At first, the wildflowers that Myop picks to create a bundle in her hand seem to add only a little to the story but on second thought you may realise, that these flowers themselves symbolise the plot of the story.
When the little ten-year-old girl strolls down the path in the woods, collecting colourful flowers, she is still unaware of the darkness our world can show. In this case, the bouquet indicates the innocence of the child in a beautiful and flawless world. Later on she comes across a skeleton, which makes her realise the painful truth behind our seemingly perfect society. The role of the flowers is accentuated when Myop lays them down, as she leaves her childhood behind her.
The above mentioned examples demonstrate that the meaning of the flowers is much deeper than we might first think, that a simple everyday object can hold such pure meaning.
Daniel Hoogenraad CTV3B
VerwijderenIn my opinion you used great vocabulary and it's still written in a way that you easily can understand it.
I like your explanation and I agree with you. I think you’ve made the importance of the flowers very clear using this sentence:” The role of the flowers is accentuated when Myop lays them down, as she leaves her childhood behind her.” Your example does indeed show that such a simple object we see every day could have such a deep meaning according as the end of your childhood.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenCtv3b
When you hear: ‘’And the summer was over.’’ you can think of two meanings. One of the meanings could be a direct meaning, which is: that it was the end of the summer, but I think the writer uses this to indicate that the girl who is just ten years old realizes life isn’t just about being happy and living the life you want, but also about sadness, death and more. This can be seen in the metaphor ‘summer’ which she uses to shows us the summer, so the happy life for the little girl Myop had ended. This story shows us that everyone at one point will realize life isn’t always good for everyone. little children are also able to understand the meaning of life. Even though you may have a very nice and prosperous life you may still see some sad things. Life is a book with happy and sad occasions from which we will never know when it will end.
Minke van Manen, ctv3a
VerwijderenI don't really agree with your paragraph, personally i don't think that 'the meaning of life' has to do with the story. In my opinion, it is more about the end of the sunny and innocence part of Myop's life.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe flowers by Alice Walker
How does the author, Alice Walker, use the symbol of flowers to show Myop’s coming-of-age experience?
In the story, Alice walker uses the flowers to show Myop aging. It starts off with lovely spring flowers, and ends darker to show how her childhood and innocence ends.In the first part of the story, the setting is really light and peaceful. Myop is an innocent child, who doesn’t know much about the world yet. This can be seen in the third paragraph, Myop spots some flowers along the river bank: “Around the spring, where the family got drinking water, silver ferns and wildflowers grew”. The flowers stand for Myops personality. She was wild and reckless. She could bloom anywere she wanted, just like the wildflowers.
Later on, she is getting more curious and adventurous. She is growing up. This is shown in the fourth paragraph. “Today she made her own path, bouncing this way and that way, vaguely keeping an eye out for snakes. She found, in addition to various common but pretty ferns and leaves, an armful of strange blue flowers with velvety ridges and a sweet suds bush full of the brown, fragrant buds”. The strange blue flowers show that she is getting to know things she didn’t know before. And by making her own path, she is doing things her own way. She doesn’t depend on other people anymore. She can take care of herself.
In the last part, the last paragraph, she finds a dead body of a killed black man. Next to the body is a single rose. The rose is the last flower, the last part of her childhood. By seeing the dead body, she was forced to grow up instantly. She was confronted to reality. She was a black girl who grew up in a country that killed innocent black people for no reason. The rose has thorns. Showing how she lost her innocence and how she now has to survive by knowing more than love. When she laid down all of her flowers, she laid down her childhood. The summer was over.
Minke van Manen, ctv3a.
VerwijderenI why do the strange blue flowers specifically say that she can take care of herself? I think that belongs more to the sentence of 'making her own path'.
I think that you are right as well, but I can explain my answer. The strange blue flowers show that she is getting to know things she didn't know before. And she is making her own path. That means that she is becoming independent. It basically implies that she can take care of herself because she doesn't need someone else to help her to follow a 'path' anymore.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI’m going to answer the question: What was the significance of the final sentence? In my opinion, Myop hung herself. This is shown in the end, when she saw the dead man. She was just picking flowers in the field when she stepped into a skull. She wasn’t scared, but curious. She walked closer to the man. She saw a rose next to the skull. When she picked it, she say the mound of which he had been killed. When she looked further she saw another piece hanging on another branch. It was a noose. Then she laid down her flowers. After theat, the writer wrote that the summer was over. To me, this means that she hung herself. I think the writer has chosen this technique so the reader can choose their own answer. There isn’t a real theory to what has happened, which makes it more fun to read.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI really like your thoughts about the end. It's something not a lot of people thought of I guess. But I don't think the writer wrote it to think about the ending, but about the meaning of the story.
VerwijderenI still like your plot twist!
I like your way of thinking about how you think the story has ended. you say that you think the writer used such an open ending, so you can think of your own ending if I understand you well. I don’t completely agree with that, I don’t think something really has happened at the end of the story, I think she used such an open ending to see if you did get the real meaning of the story.
VerwijderenI like your impression of the end of the story but I don’t agree with you. I think that, as Sterre also mentioned, the open ending with the sentence ‘and the summer was over.’ let us think about the meaning of the story. Because according to me, that sentence is a metaphor that means that her childhood was over after she discovered the corpse, and got confronted with reality.

‘And the summer was over.’ Is the last sentence of the story ‘the flowers.’ The protogonist, a young girl named Myop, is enjoying a summer morning by gathering flowers. But when she walks through the forest behind her house, she finds a dead man who has been lynched. She was not afraid but she did gave a little yelp of surprise. She walked around this spot with interest. After this she lays her gathered flowers at the side of this man as a sign of respect.
I think that at this moment, Myop faces the reality of merciless violence. This this means that her childhood, just like the summer, is now over. This kind of event mostly happens with grown-ups around the age of twenty but for a kid like Myop from just six years old and faces this cruelty.
This is already a great improvement from your last blog.

The writer uses the last sentence to close the story in a fitting way. The evidence for this is the fact that the whole story was situated in the warm seasons (spring and summer), and after Myop found the corpse the summer was over, and the cold, dark seasons start. I think the cold seasons are related to the corpse and the fall and winter symbolize death.
This is effective because it clearly indicates the end of the story which is the main objective of a last sentence. It also strengthens the founding of the corpse, the loss of a live, which is a dark event. It also enlarges the contrast between the happy start of the story and the sad ending of the story. The writer made a good choice with his last sentence and it suits the story.

VerwijderenI think you explained your idea very well, but I don't really agree with it. In my opinion the sentence "And the summer was over." means that it's the end of Myop's innocence. Because you can read in the first part of the story that she is a sweet little girl with no idea of the cruel world outside the farm. But once she finds out about the corps she realises that the world isn't only rainbows and butterflies, reality is way darker. So the moment she sees the dead body her innocence goes away. I think summer in the last sentence stands for her innocence that went away. I do agree with you that the writer chose a good last sentence.

Question 2: What is the significance of the final sentence
In my opinion the significance of the final sentence is that Myop’s summer came to an end because of something she found in the woods.
The evidence for this is that in the beginning of the story the summer was really nice. Myop was picking some flowers and singing a song. It almost looked like life didn’t have any bad sides. As Myop was picking some flowers she walked further away from her home. She went in the woods who were behind her house. She has explored the woods many times but this time she found something strange: a dead body. At this moment she started realizing that life wasn’t full of good things but that also bad things, cruel things like murder could happen. Her nice summer which was so peaceful came to an end because she found out that life didn’t only have good and nice things.
This shows that the significance of the final sentence is that Myop’s summer came to an end because she was aware of the cruel thigs that could happen in life.

BeantwoordenVerwijderen2. In my opinion the last sentence: “And the summer was over.” Doesn’t actually mean that the summer was over, it means that after her experiences in the woods Myop’s childhood ended. At first she was really happy and felt good in the warm sun, but after finding the dead body she didn’t really felt happy anymore. In a way innocence of her childhood ended as she discovered the reality of life.
This change can be seen in the following sentence: “Myop began to circle back to the house, back to the peacefulness of the morning. It was then she stepped smack into his eyes.” In the first sentence Myop had no worries and felt good. She was a child of ten years old. But in the second sentence everything changed. After she found the dead body she realised that life wasn’t only about flowers and sunshine but also had a dark side. She was the same girl of ten years old, but her look on the world changed.
This shows that the ‘summer’ is used as a metaphor in this story. Not only the summer ended but her childhood was taken away as well.

The flowers by Alice Walker
What is the significance of the final sentence?
The final sentence of the story is: ‘And the summer was over.’ In my opinion the significance of the final sentence is that Myop has grown from a little girl into a big girl of 10 years old, who has to deal with reality.
We know this because she gave a little yelp of surprise and she gazed around the spot with interest, because she had never seen something like this before. Then she realized that it could also happen to her that she would be lynched, so it’s a coming-of-age experience. She laid down her flowers, which shows that she, as a big girl of 10 years old, suddenly understands the cruel reality.
In the last sentence the word ‘summer’ stands for Myop’s childhood and innocence. First the story is very happy and colourful, but after she found the dead man the story becomes very sad. Her happiness is over and her life had changed; she now saw the world from another perspective, the perspective of a big girl who realizes that there isn’t only happiness in the world.
So the last sentence symbolizes growing up and getting out of a protected childhood into the ‘real’ world, which isn’t only a happy place.

Question 2:
In my opinion, the significance of the last sentence is that the end of the summer is used figuratively, because the writer means that there has come an end to the innocence and childhood of Myop.
This can be seen in the story when the story starts very happy. On a very beautiful day Myop was singing and picking flowers while she was walking. But when she walks just as far as normal, the strangeness of the land made it not as pleasant as usual. She was going back to the house, back to the peacefulness. But while she was walking back, she found a dead body. Suddenly all the innocence and peacefulness was gone in Myop. She finds out that the world isn’t as beautiful as she thought it was.
This suggests that Myop is not the innocent child she was before. She has seen a little bit of real life, the death. From that moment on she realises that life doesn’t only exist of beautiful and nice things, but also awful things can happen.
I like the way you explained why the summer ended for Myop. You made great use of the PEE and really used your own opinion.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat is the significance of the final sentence? (and a bit of question 1)
BeantwoordenVerwijderen“And the summer was over.” That is the last sentence of the story ‘The Flowers’ by Alice Walker.
In my opinion the summer is a metaphor for the innocence of Myop.
We know this because at the beginning of the story, Myop is happy and has nothing to worry about. She thinks that life is amazing while picking flowers. But then she sees a man who lies in the grass. He is dead and his clothes are rotten away. Near the head was a pink rose. When Myop picked the wild flower, she saw that there hung a thing around the root. It was a rotten noose.
This shows that life isn’t always nice. The man was lynched. The flowers that Myop had picked, are also a metaphor. I think that they mean the happy moments in her life. All the flowers through the story represent an event of that. After seeing the man, Myop realizes that life and the world can be horrible, her childhood ended there.
I totally agree with your blog post and I especially like your thoughts about the flowers. Just like you, I thought that the summer stood for her innocence and childhood. But I haven’t thought about the flowers having a meaning too. I think your explanation about the flowers representing ‘the happy moments in her life’ is very beautiful and nice!
VerwijderenI like your thoughts about the significance of the last sentence, but the part I don’t really agree with is : ‘’ The flowers that Myop had picked, are also a metaphor. I think that they mean the happy moments in her life.’’. My point of view is that those flowers don’t represent ‘’the happy moments in life’’ because at the end of the story she puts those flowers down. I don’t think she won’t have any happy moments in her life ever again just because she saw a dead man. In my opinion those flowers stand for the childhood of Myop which had ended as soon as she saw the dead man.

Question 2
The writer uses this final sentence to close the story in a good way. In my opinion it is much better to end a story with anything except “The end” because it is so boring if you end a story like that.
This can be seen in the end of the story, because you might be wondering what will happen to her and what she will experience in the other seasons. This is effective because it could change the readers point of view. They might be making a completely new story and that is the significance of the last sentence.
Or you could say that the writer uses the last sentence as a reference to the innocence and happy life of the girl in the story. For example: summer is a happy, innocent and a fond memory of children. This suggests that the final sentence could mean that the summer(holiday) is over and school will begin or that she won’t be the happy and innocent girl anymore that she was before the summer, because she saw bad things.
Quinty Smit, CTV3a
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion the writes uses the very last sentence to give us an impression of what happens after the story. An example is that her view of the world is changed. She lived a very happy and peaceful life on a farm. Harvesting the corn, walking from the henhouse to the pigpen and making up songs while she was walking along the fence. If you are a ten year old girl and this is all you know of the world there could be a lot of surprises waiting for you. When she is walking back to the peaceful morning on the farm from the woods her first surprise is waiting. Her surprise is that the world is not as innocent and peaceful as it seems. There are some dark secrets nobody wants you to know about. Like that dead body, with his naked grin, large broken white teeth and big bones. It is something she has never seen or experienced before. It cracks her innocence and changes her view. The sentence “And the summer was over” has been used to show that the innocent and peaceful part of her life now is over. The summer represents that part, but since it is now over it will not be like that anymore. She will look at things differently now
Yelina Bottse, CTV3a
VerwijderenI agree with almost everything you mentioned. I Liked how you really described Myop her life before the incident and how it could possibly be after. The part that I would argue is : “The writer uses the very last sentence to give us an impression of what happens after the story.” In my opinion the writer indeed uses the last sentence to give us an impression, but of what the events in the story have caused instead of what happens after the story. I think that because the last sentence in a way is a conclusion. So it sums up what happened but in a very subtle and vague way so you can interpret it in your very own way. But to sum up I think that your blogpost contains a lot of good opinions.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat clues in the text allow us to construct a historical context around this story?
In my opinion there are multiple clues to construct the context of the story. Firstly, you have the girl who’s skin colour is black. This can possibly mean that the story is located in Africa or in the United States. The little girl Myop grew up in an area with corn, cotton, peanuts and squash. Therefore, I think the story is located in the Southern US states like Mississippi. In and around Mississippi there is a lot of farmland where cotton and corn grow, and that is where Myop lives. It is a rural area. And lastly, Myop found 2 rotted remains of a noose. This can mean that the tall men was killed while hanging him on the big oak tree. In history this can only mean 1 thing: slavery. In the southern US states there was a lot of slavery until the end of the 19th century.
In the southern US states lived a lot of black Americans who had to work on cotton farms. They were treated really badly. They were hung if they didn’t do the work that they should do. This story shows that it is really good that slavery is abolished. Everyone should be treated the same and have the same rights.
Yelina Bottse, Ctv3a
VerwijderenI love your view on the historical context and how you describe it. I think this because no one really mentions the US, slavery & Mississippi the way you do. Your blogpost also shows that you took your time to do some research. To sum up I think you wrote a very impressive post and did a really good job!
I have found a few clues in the text allow us to construct a historical context around this story.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenFirstly, the author tells us that that Myop’s toy is a short and knobby stick. In my opinion this can be seen as a factor that allows us to believe that this story is an historical event, because nowadays young children play with toys that are made by companies. The evidence for this is that a child would never choose some short and knobby stick over a spectacular toy that was made by a company that has presented this product in a spectacular way. This implies that the story is an historical event.
Secondly, the family of Myop gets their drinking water from a stream. This indicates that the story might have happened in the past, because nowadays nearly everybody has access to clean drinking water from a company that has properly cleaned the water before they allow you to drink it from a crane.
Similarly, for example: in the story the author tells us that Myop passes a smokehouse. People mostly used smokehouses for curing food by exposure to smoke in the past. We know this because nowadays farmers don’t have their own smokehouses, because everything is done by companies that sell the food separately from the farmers. Which tells us that in this story the farm is pictured a kind of farm that people used and lived in, in the past.

Could you state a specific time period. The only thing I know about the historical context after reading this is that it happened in the past and that it's a "historical event" whatever that means. Those are the only statements about the time period you made, there are things you bring up that could narrow it down but you don't use them to narrow down the time frame; So according to what you have stated the story could have happened somewhere between the big bang and WW1.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 2 (+a part of question 1 I guess):
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe story about the girl Myop ends with a simple sentence: “And the summer was over.” I think this is a metaphor, the summer being her innocent childhood. As we all know, after the summer comes the autumn, which is usually way colder and more humid than the summer. Just like the autumn, Myop’s life will now have way more disappointments and bad moments than before. And where the autumn is usually colder than the summer, Myop’s life will have more cold moments as well, just not literally. In the story we can see Myop being very innocent and happy, playing with her stick and making up happy songs. But after she sees the skeleton of the man in the forest, she lays down the flowers she has gathered (maybe being a metaphor for all the happy moments in her childhood?), and leaves them behind, maybe to gather different and more beautiful flowers? Or maybe to gather cold and ugly flowers? Time will tell.

Question 2, What is the significance of the final sentence?
The last sentence ‘ And the summer was over.’
The last sentence is kind of unclear and confusing , but I think the writer uses this sentence to make the story go deeper. It is a short story but it has the capacity of a much longer book, because of all the deep sentences.
An example of this are the 2nd and 3rd paragraph, because in this paragraph everything is amazing for her. She is the only one in the world and her song, everything is fine, but only 2 paragraphs later she steps onto a dead head. Which is kind of weird, because it goes from amazing to very bad.
So, I think that this has been used to show that in the summer not only good things happen, but also a lot of bad things. This is pretty important, a wise lesson and in my opinion a very good ending.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe flowers, Alice Walker
I am going to talk about what the significance of the last sentence is. The last sentence: “the summer was over” not only means that the summer was over. But also that things can change real quick, things can be over in only a few minutes. The moment when Myop saw the body her life changed. The summer is standing for the good things in life, that we have to appreciate life when it is going good because it can change real quick even because of things that look really innocent. The man is standing for the bad things in life, the bad things can be everywhere and can come in your live at the moment you don’t aspect them to come that’s why you have to enjoy life when its going good, you have to be thankful for the good things because even though it looks like its granted it isn’t.
So for me the final sentence stands for that you have to be thankful for the good times in life because they can be over really quick.

I’m going to answer question 2, what is the significance of the final sentence?
I don’t think the last sentence “and the summer is over” is really about the ending of the summer. It’s more about the ending of Myop’s cheerfulness and childhood, because she started to think differently about life after the experience with the dead man. Also, at the beginning of the story Myop is all happy and the story itself is cheerful as well. But when you reach the part of the dead man the story changes into a darker story and Myop’s view of life changes as well. This is what I think Alice Walker means with the last sentence. Because summer is sometimes used as a symbol for childhood and cheerful things and that’s what ended when Myop saw the dead body. She started to find out that life isn’t all about happiness and peace, she starts to see the darker side of life too. And when the summer ends winter starts to come and that is most of the time in a symbolic way, also seen as a darker part of life. So when Alice Walker wrote that the summer ended, there indeed ended something but not just the summer, it was the childhood of Myop.
I totally agree with you! I think that you described very well that the summer ended and that she was going to a new stage in life.

Myop is an innocent ten year old girl. She was picking flowers until she stepped on the skull of a dead man. Near where she stepped into the skull was a pink rose. When she wanted to pick the rose and add it to her bundle of flowers, she noticed a raised mound around the root of the rose. It was the rotten remains of a noose. At that moment her view of the world changed. She learned that there weren’t only happy and good things in life, but also sad and bad things.
Myop’s summer was over because of this experience. With “And the summer was over” the writer doesn’t mean the season was over. It’s a metaphor for Myop’s innocence and childhood that ended.

And the summer was over. That is the final sentence of the book “The Flowers”, by Alice Walker. But what is the significance of this sentence? It can be understood literally and figuratively. Literally it means that the summer ended. But it can have a lot of other meanings. For example that the sun will disappear, the flowers start to die and it becomes colder. The main character, Myop, is really happy, because it’s summer and everything seems to be fine. She makes up happy songs and plays with her short knobby stick. She felt light and good in the warm sun. But the summer is not as peaceful as it seems. She saw a dead body. Near the dead body was a pink flower. She laid down her flowers and that’s where the summer ends. This means that the summer, the innocent part and the peaceful part in Myop’s life are over now.

What is the significance of the final sentence?
In my opinion, the final sentence “And the summer was over” means that Myop had lost her innocence as a child as she witnessed a death for the first time in her entire life. Myop is a small girl whom took care of some small animals and a couple of cotton, peanut, corn and squash farms, together with her family. One day she decides to wander into the darker part of the forest to collect some flowers (presumably for her mother), when she suddenly steps on a dead man’s body. To pay respect to the deceased man, she lay down some flowers at his body. After she looked around, she noticed a semi-buried noose, suggesting that the man had killed himself, this can most certainly traumatize someone and end their innocent childhood.
For the most part I agree with you, but I think that it could've also been possible that the man was lynched, instead of killed himself, which you stated in your last sentence. I don't know who is correct, or if we both are incorrect.

The significance of the final sentence.
In my opinion the writer uses the final sentence to show that Myop has grown up. We can see this because the summer represents the childhood and innocence of Myop. The day starts off as a sunny, happy day but as Myop goes into the woods, the theme gets darker and this means that she is slowly losing her innocence of her childhood.
This innocence is completely lost when she accidentally steps on the skull of a dead man. When she goes and investigate the spot, she finds a rotten noose and remains of a rope hanging on a tree. This is symbolising how Myop finds out about the harsh reality of the real world. The final sentence “And the summer was over.” means that Myop has lost her childhood innocence and has grown up.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenArchetypal meaning of Flowers (the short story)
I have read some of my peers’ posts and compared the ways we interpreted the stories. I noticed that my interpretation was a lot more abstract than my classmates’. When I was reading their posts it felt as if I was reading the same recapitulation of the story formulated in different ways.
I will start with the allegory in the story, the “moral of the story” in laymen’s terms. Since we haven’t discussed allegories in class I will explain them, because I fear that the concept might fly over some heads if I don’t. I have an even better idea, this is the link to the allegory page on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory, read that.
If you have read the wiki page or already understood allegories we can continue. If you break the story down, it becomes clear that it’s a story about Myop growing up; most of you understood that. What you didn’t seem to get is that the story is more about the transitioning from one stage to the other in the collective human experience than just in this one relatively insignificant girl. I forgot who said it but the story reminded me of the quote: “A boy doesn’t become a man until his father dies.” to which Jung replied: “But that death can be metaphorical.” We become independent when our parents, the illuminating light in this dark world, seize to shine on the unknown paths before us. You might think: “But what does this have to do with the story?”. Well, your parents protect you from the cruelness of the world but once you encounter it, which in most cases happens slowly, your parents will have to give up that position and let the child become independent. Read the story of Buddha’s upbringing if you want an example. Even though they might still be alive your parents will lose their role as parents.
You grow up because of necessity, because the world is cold and cruel; and if you don’t the unforgiving world will make you.
You just wrote a whole book!

Question 1: How does the author, Alice Walker, use the symbol of flowers to show Myop’s coming-of-age experience?
The small girl (myop) walks through the fields and picks up the nicest flowers to make a bouquet. Even though her parents don’t have a lot of money she still lives a happy life. She is only aware of the happy side of the world. what she doesn’t realize is that the world isn’t just about good things. When she was walking back to her house, after she made her bouquet, she almost stepped on a dead man, a black man who was killed. At this point she realizes that the world doesn’t only consist of nice things but that there also happens a lot of bad things. When she put down the flowers I knew that the flowers represent Myop getting older. This also explains the final sentence, ‘And the summer was over’. I think summer stands for her childhood and that she now is getting older and wiser.

In this blog I am going to discuss the significance of the last sentence of this story. The last sentence is: And the summer was over.
In my opinion, the writer uses ‘the summer’ as a metaphor for Myop’s youth. Before she found the dead body, everything was perfect. She was just a normal 10-year-old girl who was walking in the woods behind the house. She was singing and looking for flowers. She was just living her happy life. I think that the writer connects this happy life with the summer.
All of the sudden, something happened that changed her happy life forever: she found a dead body. She had never seen a dead body before. Finding a dead body in the woods is a really dramatic experience for an adult, let alone for a 10-year-old girl. Her carefree life will never be the same again. She wasn’t that little 10-year-old girl from this morning anymore. She was a girl who had to face things that are actually for adults.
I think what the writer is trying to say with ‘and the summer was over’ is that her youth is over. She has to understand that life isn’t only about flowers and singing nice songs. Really bad things happen in this world and she has to face this real life.
I totally agree with you. After seeing the body, her innocent childhood slowly started to fade and she started facing the adult life.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my opinion there are multiple significances of the final sentences. For example ‘the summer’ could symbolize her childhood because this traumatic experience will have an impact on her and will take away her innocence and would also change her happy view on the world. Which means that after that moment her childhood was over.
Another example is that ‘the summer’ could illustrate happy and positive times, because the incident will lead to Myop finally seeing more than good in the world and will eventually change her perspective on multiple things. This suggests that after the encounter with the body she will now also face sad and bad times.
My last example of this is that ‘the summer’ could embody the suffering and the horrible death of the lynched man. That is demonstrated when Myop lays down her flowers, which can be seen as a nice gesture of her to the no longer alive man she came across. This suggests that now he could rest in peace even though he had a horrible death.
To conclude you could say that there are different significances to the final sentence because you can interpret it your own way.

Question 2:
I think the significance of the final sentence “the summer is over” is that she loses her innocent and peaceful childhood. And she realizes how bad the world is.
This can be shown when Myop was just walking behind her house picking flowers and singing. The place was very familiar, she walked here almost every day. Still it felt a bit unpleasant. The air was damp, the silence was close and deep. When she was walking back home, she stepped into an eye of a dead man. She gave a little yelp, but wasn’t really afraid. When she moved the layers of earth and leaves she sees that the dead man was a tall man. She was looking around the body and sees a rose. But this wasn’t a normal rose, around the stem of the rose was a ring. The ring was attached to the remains of a rotten noose. When Myop saw this it broke her heart. This is why she lies down her flowers. Her soul isn’t so innocent anymore. She now realizes what is really happening in the world.
This suggests that the final sentence “the summer is over” means that Myop’s summer ended, because she realizes how bad the world can be.
You describe beautifully what the sentence 'the summer is over" means in your opinion. But try to keep your sentences in the same time, and not mix present and past.

What clues in the text allow us to construct a historical context around this story?
In my opinion, the setting of the story is around 1880.
The first clue is found in the rotting body, the man got lynched.
So, the man got lynched and people dropped him off near a house/barn. This can be read in the last three paragraphs. Back then, people got lynched sometimes. Nowadays people don’t get lynched anymore. This shows that the story was a long time ago.
The second clue; the girl is walking outside of her house/barn, picking flowers and stabbing chicken. This can be seen in the first 3 paragraphs. Children don’t do that anymore these days. Nowadays, children watch television or play games on their tablet.
1: The girl is outside, on a big lawn near her house. She picks flowers and stabs chickens on the open lawn. Children don’t do this anymore.
2: There is a lynched man dropped near her house. People don’t get lynched today in old outfits.

What clues in the text allow us to construct a historical context around this story?
You can find multiple clues about the time period in which the story happened.
First of all, you can see that Myop and her parents lived in a “sharecropper cabin” this indicates Myops parents were sharecroppers. Sharecropping is a form of agriculture in which a landowner allows a worker to use the land in return for a share of the crops they make on their portion of land.
Sharcropping was common practice between the 1870s and the 1950s. This fact gives us an idea about when this poem took place.
Furthermore, you can read that the dead man Myop stood on, was wearing a blue overall.
“ All his clothes had rotted away except some threads of blue denim from his overalls.” http://theliterarylink.com/flowers.html
These types of overalls were invented in the 1890s, what places the poem between 1890 and 1950.
It's amazing how you did all this research about very tiny parts of the the story, like the suit of the lynched man. This is a very "Julian" thing to do xD.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 1:
In my opinion the flowers symbolise that she ends a stage of life and starts a new one. In the story it is read: “Today she made her own path”. Right before this passage the author mentioned that Myop had walked through the woods before, but at that time her mother had joined her. Furthermore, Myop notices that some things are very common but there are other things that appear to be strange. For example, Myop sees ferns and leaves that are pretty and common, but she also notices strange flowers along her path.
This indicates that Myop is moving from one stage of life to another. She is finding her own way of life and is no longer following in the footsteps of her mother. When Myop starts the transition she sees that in several respects she is the same as many other people, but she also realizes that she can be very different from the rest.

2.What is the significance of the final sentence?
According to most people the summer stands for a warm, nice and happy time of the year. In this story, the summer also resembles a happy childhood. The last sentence says “and the summer was over”. I think that this means that the happy life and innocence of Myop’s childhood is over and that aspects of real life start to show up. That life isn’t always good, but that there are also a lot of bad and sad things happening in the world.
An example of the happy childhood of Myop is shown at the beginning of the story when she’s singing a song and picking flowers. Later in the story Myop discovers a bad thing that can happen in life, which is in this story death.
In short, Myop now also knows about the shadow sides of life. That life isn’t always a fairytale and that there are horrible things in life such as death, murder and racism. Myop leaves her childhood time behind and lives further with a better understanding of life.

Question 2: What is the significance of the final sentence?
I think the significance of the final sentence is that it is showing how the innocent, sunny childhood of Myop ends. It is putting an end to the story which at first shows an lovely childhood of an child. Playing in the woods and things like that which represent all good things in Myop’s childhood. This text also talks about the sunny summer of Myob’s life which are representing all those positive things, but then suddenly she sees the bad things of life, like in this case murder. Then the summer ends writes the writer. I think what he means by that is that her innocent childhood at that point ends by figurative saying that her childhood ends. I like the fact that the sentence stands by itself, it gives the story an last other turn.

In this story the protagonist: Myop, was wandering around next to the river when she stumbled upon the remains of a dead man. In the end of the story the writer uses the last sentence ‘And the summer was over.’ to tell the readers that Myop unfortunately lost her innocence. In my opinion this has been used to leave the reader sad and confused after reading that sentence.
What I mean with innocence is that everyone once had an innocence when they were children, and some people have lost their innocence earlier than others making them emotionless or more serious when they grow up. They could also turn out to be depressed or have anger management issues. In Myop’s case her innocence was lost at the moment she saw the dead man: after that moment she was not able to enjoy her surroundings and nature as she did before.
We don’t know how Myop grew up with seeing the dead man, but she certainly will remember that moment for the rest of her life.

Question: What is the significance of the final sentence, ‘’and the summer was over’’?
Firstly , the first part of this story is written in a way that there is a lot of happiness in this world and there are only good things.
For example this takes place in the summer. When it is summer, I think of things like: the sun what gives you a better mood than rain and when it is really cold. Myop was also playing outside, thinking about a good song and making lots of fun. In contrast to this, the moment she took another way to go in the woods and she later found a dead body, you can see it as when you look from another perspective to the world, ‘’And the summer was over’’. I think this means when the weather is way worse, there are kind of depression periods, life isn’t always that good. The same as she came along the dead man, she thought about the unhappy things. In fact this world can be really bad. It is just how you look to it and the experiences you have to deal with. In this case, she has to deal with this situation and eventually she has to take this horrible memory in life with her.
As a conclusion I would say that there are two parts about living in the world, the good and the bad parts. You come along both those parts. It’s just about how you react to this and how you want to live. You can make this world happier and better for yourself if you’re willing to do it.
I agree with your explanation of your statement. But I think when the weather is worse, it isn't immediately a 'depression period'. In my opinion this period of time can be worse for some people, but depression is another thing that is different than a period of time that is a little bit worse

The last sentence of the story is; ‘and the summer was over’. The writer uses this as a metaphor for the childhood and innocence of Myop. This can be seen when looking at the story. The story starts very happy with a innocence little girl who went picking flowers in her summer vacation. The sun is shining, and she is describing the beautiful things in her surroundings. Halfway through the story gets a turn. Myop doesn't recognize the place where she is anymore. The story becomes a bit darker ´It seemed gloomy in the little cove in which she found herself. The air was damp, the silence close and deep.´ Then Myop found the skeleton of the man who had been lynched. Myop is now confronted with the cruelty of this world. She finds out that there isn't only happiness in the world. Myop was a innocent little girl but in one moment her childhood was taken away. This shows that the ´summer´ stands for the childhood of Myop and that her childhood was over when she was confronted with the reality of this world. Her summer was over.

The Flowers, by Alice Walker
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis story ends with the sentence “And the summer was over”. In my opinion this is the perfect ending to this story about a young girl’s loss of innocents and coming of age.
The story starts with Myop wandering around her family home, feeling save and happy and playing to the rhythm of her song. In the next part of the story she starts exploring the woods behind her house on her own, going further and further. Finally she reaches new terrain and starts following (making) her own path. She’s starts feeling unconfutable because off “the strangeness of the land”. She decides to circle back home and longs for familiarity, it is then she finds the corps of a man by stepping “smack into his eyes”. This man seems to have died a long time ago and is now becoming part of nature. This symbolises finding out live is finite. After finding this corpse she lays down her “flowers” or innocence her summer or childhood ended’.
This is the significance of the final sentence, coming of age, growing up.

The flowers symbolize that she isn’t a kid anymore, because she lied the flowers on the ground, and left them behind. In just one minute her whole life changes. She discovers that there are bad things in life, such as murder and crime, she wasn’t aware of the fact that happiness isn’t everywhere.
“she felt good in the warm sun” means that she was happy that day and felt good, but after all she saw a man, lying on the ground, dead. She grows up by learning and discovering. This day, all of a sudden, she grew up. She learned that crime was something. You’re really becoming an adult by discovering things by herself.
The flowers also refers to the innocence of the child, she seems to be nice and happy, always and everywhere. Her life has changed in a good and a bad way. It’s good that she learned something new because she will maybe threat everyone better because she is afraid to lose them, but it could also be in a bad way because she’ll maybe think crime and murder is normal. She, as a 10 year old girl laid down her flowers, she isn’t a kid anymore, she understands life way better now.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuestion 2:
And the summer was over. That was the final sentence to the story. There are multiple ways to interpret this sentence. You can of course take it very literal. It can mean that the summer is literally over. But I personally don’t think that’s the case.
The summer can also be a metaphor for something else. It can mean that the innocence of her childhood is over. Because seeing a dead body can be quite shocking for an adult, let alone a child. This can have significant effects on the life of a child.
It said in the story “Myop laid down her flowers. And the summer was over.”. If you replace the word summer by her innocent childhood, it would still make perfect sense. If you think of summer you think of good times and having nothing on your mind. That could be exactly what they mean. The little kid realized that life isn’t just flowers but it’s way more deeper than that.
I think that is what they mean by “Myop laid down her flowers.”. She ended her innocent childhood, because she realized that life isn’t just about flowers and sunshine, it is way more complicated than that.
